Updating Legacy and Older Legendary Skins to Current "Legendary" Standards?

Guide to Skin Price Tiers

Will legacy legendary skins ever be updated, or are there any plans for updates on them in the future? I'm talking visual updates to make them legendary by current standards. Some skins can be misleading, such as Gentleman Cho'Gath, being a legendary you expect new particles and effects, a voice-over, & new textures and that is not what you get. Some parts are great, but something to really make them legendary would be nice, (I.E. new effects). I mean, some of the more current 1350RP skins are better than these listed, such as Dragonwing Corki, Pool Party Mundo and even Soulstealer Vladimir, in my opinion. Of course they have nostalgic value for being legacy or some of the first skins, updates to current standards should be included in Visual Updates at least; like Annie's VGU where they ignored Annie in Wonderland. I sure hope with the upcoming Galio update they retouch Gatekeeper Galio. Just my two cents on the topic. I own all legendary skins except Annie in Wonderland and Zombie Brand (planning on getting next October), I just feel like some of them could use some retouching or adding to them. I understand there's a lot that's changed and you have the right to not use them or just not get them. That's not my point, my point is that by current standards, as per Riot, these skins are not Legendary aside from nostalgic value, and as such should be updated to be what they were intended. Most already have voice-overs, and extensive re-textures, so the main addition would be for the visual effects. Thanks for reading and hope you agree with what I'm trying to say.

ikr, they updated Tristana Annie Heimerdinger and TwistedFate but didnt update their legendary skins... And those champs have better skins at lower prices.

all those skins actually worth 750 to 1350 RP now, there should be price reduction or update!

Yes, they still went through and did a partial update to her Firefighter skin though. I feel like they could've did a little more than was done. All that was really done was changed her auto attack to water bombs and change her bomb's visual and sound effects. That one is pretty decent, but if they go through the trouble to retouch something, why not finish it and redo the whole thing instead of just half a complete job?

Well so was Alien Heimerdinger, and yet he barely has anything worth the Legendary price.

Well the thing is that alien heimerdinger was in the vault already. Galio will be the first champion to receive a big VGU who actually has a legendary skin that is still in the shop.

Why does that have to do with them not getting updates to preexisting Updated skins that do not meet the Legendary quota? By that notion Galio as well wont get any new stuff for his Legendary.

People have talked about them not being worth the money, and with the market for skins being what it is now, they would need to be sold for less RP if they were still in the store now otherwise they'd be too expensive and nobody would buy them. That in mind, old legendary skins are on average worse than newer legendary skins, so people aren't satisfied that Riot has depreciated skins that cost the same amount.

Since Gatekeeper Galio is still in the store, it would be in Riot's best interest to make sure that it doesn't fall below the quality curve like previous legendary skins. Riot has no real incentive to update the legendary skins that are no longer in the shop unless they plan on having a sale some time soon, otherwise people will be getting them for free via hextech crafting. A skin being unavailable can make it more desirable to players inherently regardless of quality (see Black Alistar), so if players want old legendary skins regardless of their quality, Riot has virtually no incentive to update them.

True enough. In making this post, my original thoughts were to attempt to get a response from someone at Riot. I feel like they would be better entirely if they changed them. I mean, I have Hextech Annie and that skin is a hundred times better than Annie in Wonderland. I'm just saying there's plenty that could've been done like changing the color of her fire or something simple. I understand that people want things just to want them, because nobody else has them - that's why I collect skins. It appeals to a small amount of the community who actually have them, but I was hoping in making a post things might be seen and opinions shared and possibly changes could occur in the future with continued efforts. I like them for nostalgic value, it's just I wish they were a little more than retextures in most cases.

The outdated legendary skins are in the vault because they are outdated and Riot doesn't want to bring them back into the main shop,so where is the point in making them legendary quality if they can't be sold on a regular basis?They can keep them outdated simply because they are in the vault for outdated skins.

The gatekeeper however is in the shop,he is a skin that is still sold regularly and even has his own voice over.

They might be in the legacy vault, but does that spare them from updates entirely? I mean Ryze just received a new update and his limited and legacy skins were updated. There's no monetary gain for his limited skin, yet they still redid that one.

There's nothing saying that they couldn't re-release the skins after they updated them as well.

Ryzes halloween skins received updated particles,his vault-skins were left without any new effects even though professor ryze is a 975-skin just like the halloween ones.

And they might run into legal trouble if they resell the skins. It would be similar to the situation with the limited skins and back then they had to refund the limited skins to everyone.

They already resell the skins when the release them from the vault in January. They're legacy, not limited.

In Ryze's case, they did redo his limited skins with the latest rework. I don't know about particle effects, but they definitely retextured them. They were definitely updated, because they were on the PBE with updated textures.

When a champion gets a VU they'll update all the skins,regardless if they are legacy,limited or whatever.

However they seem to update the skins that aren't in the vault(or who are event-exclusive) with more effects. Professor ryze for example just got an updated model,while Pirate ryze and zombie ryze(halloween skins) got new effects in addition to the new model,even though all 3 are 975-skins.

Then why not just upgrade the skin to "acceptable quality to price" status and sell it again. Since they havent upgraded any skin beyond just the visual side (like the VO), then there is little chance that Galio will get it, despite it currently in the shop. Heck, they still havent upgraded the base VO for a lot of champions that had VUs, so skins are even less likely.

They once said that they have no intention of releasing the skins back into the shop,because there are people who like the fact that these skins are "rare" compared to others(yeah they did break their promise with some limited skins,but they refunded all RP for the previous purchases,so that came at a cost)

Pulsefire Ezreal needs to be touched up too, it's old and the other two legendary skins far outclass it texture wise.

I wasn't getting into the Ultimate skins, but I see Pulsefire Ezreal is a big topic. Pulsfire Ezreal could use some retouching to make it a smoother skin - definitely agreed.

I love how the ultimate skins show the not as liked as much as DJ Sona Ezreal and Udyr skins.

well you see riot only really started going all out after Pulse fire ezreal of course you can tell as the years went on how better they got of course i still like SG udyr the best but thats only because his base model is so shit that comparing them is like comparing a piece of shit to the stars

I feel like the original concept of an ultimate skin (a complete reimagining of a champ) honestly wouldn't be bad ideas for a VU. But at the time of creating the first two ultimate skins, I don't think Riot has really been dedicating much at all into updating champions to modern standards at the time. I know it's a joke to say SG Udyr is basically just a paid visual update, but I honestly think that's exactly what it is.

I feel like Corporate Mundo could use an update for sure. I love Mundo, but it's all the same except for his Cleaver animation. They could have changed the W animation to some briefcases or flaming office papers or something. I understand the lack of animation to add effects to his E and his ultimate.

Also, Red Baron Corki is just a retexture as is Ice Tobbaggan Corki. They changed literally nothing except the actual skin. There's got to be something better for an 1820RP skin.

I ended up with both of Corki's Legendaries through Hextech. If re-released today they'd be maybe 975 RP, due to the extensive model/texture changes but complete lack of any new particles.

They can do something. Like changing his thunder to something like a beer keg falling down or making bubbles around his R for a drunken rage type effect. There's always a change to make it better.

There was a very large thread on the old forums concerning MTF and how it didn't look as good as other legendaries.

Riot simply announced that they weren't going to upgrade it because it would be the exact same amount of work but would not be financially viable (or something like that). This was confirmed in the Visual Upgrade done a few years ago.

Darn, pretty sad to see that it didn't end up with any real progress on that. Just read the thread. Just wondering why they would just abandon skins like that, but still rework out of date champions. Legacy content continues to be updated in some cases - Zombie Ryze in Ryze's newest update and even Human Ryze and Triumphant Ryze - limited content. You would think that they would re-release these skins as legendary and reap more profits, rather than just let them die off. Kinda sad, but thank you for the information!

Reworking a champ (like New Yorick) into something they can make new skins for boosts the company's ability to money. Since skin sales are Riot's only way to make money in their game, it's worth taking an unpopular champ and making something better out of it.

On the other hand, Riot believes that reworking a Legendary skin to meet current standards wouldn't boost sales enough to justify the cost as anyone who would buy the skin already did so. Plus, Riot would need an entirely new department to upgrade old Legendary skins to meet the current standards.

Technically, Pulsefire Ezreal fits their standard, he may need some updates for smoothness and how well the skin looks, but he does fit their standard of what an Ultimate skin should be. This post is mainly about skins that do not fit that standard.

I'm surprised that Surprise Party Fiddlesticks wasn't included. It's considered a Legendary skin, but didn't receive the full treatment; ofc he has new icons, new vfx and sfx, but he has no new VO, no taunt and joke animation, and no recall animation.

It feels more like an Epic skin than a Legendary, and it's starting to lose its quality when newer and better Legendary skins are pumping out each year.

Either Riot needs to update his Legendary skin, OR give him a new Legendary skin.

They had said they won't.

I've been waiting with magnificent tf for years, I even managed to get a refund of the skin past my 3 refunds I used 5 years ago

Then I got the skin again when it went on sale for an event :p

Cause you never know

They said they won't update the skins but they also promised compensation for the pantheon fiasco and promised they would never sell skins that went into the vault originally

Hell we might get king Rammus for sale too you never know with rito!
