Constructive Critisism on the state of League of Legends (Website, Client, Lore)

Hello, my name is Megablackhand and like most of you, I am a League player. Fairly, I really do suck at the game itself, so I won't go into game-mechanics here. But I want to adress some problems that I see with League of Legends overall, that Riot Games should fix to really improve the experience for this community.

I will devide this Thread in bigger subjects to make it as clear as possible The Sections will be:

  • The Problem with the Website
  • The Problem with the Client
  • The Problem with Data
  • The Problem how Riot handles Lore

The Problem with the Website

I honestly think, Riot Games knows that the official LeagueofLegends.com Website is very outdated in both design and Information (Doesn't matter if it is Champion Stats or Lore). I think, for new players this is a big turn off. The site looks really old and does not feel very smooth to browse. In this regard I think, the League-Client does a better job. It has simple but recognizable designs that let the whole Client look like a quality piece of software. It also provides fresh and updated Information (such as Champion Bios) wich the official Website doesn't. It looks really unprofessional, to see the Website being threaten with the cold shoulder. My Solution would be, to make Client and Website the same experience. We've seen it in other Game Softwares, that the Desktop Clients are basically the Websites themselves, pretty much copy-pasted for use in an application. Merging Website and Client would not just make it look more professional and fun for new players, but will also make maintance easier. The Clients Overview and News tabs refer to the side anyways At least this is what I can think of it. I don't know how much resources need to be put in such a project, but I think it is very important to make a Client (and nothing else are the players honestly) belief to download a high quality game.

**The Problem with the Client **

Even though I said, that I think the Client could be a good base for the Website, I think it still lacks certain information for players, who are playing on a regular basis. I think, that under the Champions tab the overall Stats and Ability scalings of a Champion should be shown. Of course I could just look on the internet, but Riot has the ability to to let me check it with with definite certaincy when - for example - a new patch is released. Also, this would make another Feature possible: To compare two Champions by their Stats - eye to eye, toe to toe. This is not a "must have", but a pretty neat "nice to have" for the future of league. Also, it would be nice to see information like win% and pick% for Champions (maybe even Runes) on the current patch. Also, not a "must have", but a "nice to have" in my opinion.

The Problem with Data

Riot, I'd like to see you being more open about the Data you gather among the current state of the game. Like overall win%, pick% ban% of certain Champions (overall average KDA, Damage, Gold gain, farm). This would not only make some roles of the Champions more clear, but also allow us to see, where we as players can improve and wich Champions and Items may be a bit to powefull OR (and this is often underrated) not powerfull enough. It also makes it easier for us to understand, WHY you are doing the changes you are doing. I know, that with literally every point that I made here so far, someone may answer "Use the sites dedicated to these topics", but I must be honest and say, that for me it is part of maintenance of League to build on these fundamentals. Of course I can use these Websites, but when they would not exist anymore, gathering information like this is hard. Tis is THE competitive game out there - I think in this regard there is much room for improvement. This would not make the specific Website obsolete either, because some specify on certain topics and go pretty deep into the materia.

The Problem with the Lore

This is the part, that I can write the most about. I don't know how much Riot Games values the Lore of League of Legends. And lately we've got more content than ever in this regard. But I must be honest with you and say that I cannot see huge progress beign made.

So first off: We've got "Reworks" of the fundamental Regions of Runeterra. Wich is fine. I think it was meant to convey an idea of how the world should be established. Wich is fine. I even think it was necessary to first "design" the regions with their culture and basic nature. Wich is fine. But... this is clearly not enough. To be honest: We don't know nearly as much as we should know at the moment. It feels more like a patchwork sadly, than a thought out Lore. Because Lore always contains History:

-What happend at the very beginning (how came Runeterra to be). This is not necesserily important for US, but for Riot, cause they need to have a starting point.

  • How did Life begun on Runeterra. This may sound weird but: Is is because of Magic, or is Runeterra gifted as Earth to have the perfect conditions for Life to grow (like a sun) - hell is Runeterra even a planet, or something we mere mortals cannot comprehend, like the Moons in The Elder Scrolls Games?

  • What exacly IS Magic? Magic does not seem to exist only in living individuals? So is it like a sort of stream? A essence? Ice Cream? Can Magic be found in different aggregate states like liquid (Mana Potions)?

  • How came the States to be? I mean, there must be a start somewhere in history. Why is magic forbidden in Demacia? Why is there rivalry between the states (or more likely what event triggered it?)

  • What was the Rune War? What were the consequences? What are Runes exacly? Because they seem to be pretty important of what I can tell? What are Nexus'us(us?)es?

  • Wich Champion were involved back then (and wich of them are still alive)?

This brings me to another topic. Each Champion has their Story/Bio. That is great. I also like, that they are updated (wich in my eyes happens not frequently enough). But because we have no idea of time in Runeterra we don't know what happend when. I mean, for me it seems pretty unlikely, that most of these Champions are acting at the same period of time. Some of wich may have died already - and this would not be a bad thing. Lore and Game are not connected. Things like these make the Lore and the Stories more engaging and interesting, because they have an real impact. Let Champions interact more in Short Novels and Comics, and please release these more frequently. Take the Comic of MissFortune as an example. This is an addition for her Lore. But when is the next time we are going to hear from her adventures again? Probably, there will be at least 30 - 50 Stories of other Champions (wich is fine). But that means, that there will be a lot of time (maybe even years) without actuall progression for that Champion. And this feels very frustrating. I am someone, who can read through Lore several hours straight. Sometimes I can see myself browsing through the League-Wiki just gathering Lore Information for fun. It makes me experience League in a much deeper and more passionate way. When I had to decide, wich of all these points is the most important one for me it is THIS. Please Riot, give us more Lore to History, Regions, Culture, Fauna/Flora, Champions, Items and consequences.

At the end I want to thank everybody who read through this Wall of Text. I did not plan it out much, it was more of an "Think and write". I would like to know what you think about these topics. Maybe you disagree completly.

Anyway, have a nice day!

Lore does need prioritization. In my opinion, Riot's either:

  • Putting more emphasis on gameplay and balance due to more complaints about that
  • Trying to preserve the mystery

Either way, it would be nice to know about how Runeterra started. Part of the reason why Riot doesn't get around to lore often is because they're perfectionists when it comes to lore and want to get things right the first time. As you probably know, Riot is loath to go back on their word and don't want another slip up like the Summoner Genocide. There's also just SO MUCH STUFF in League that's it hard to capture everything. That's why newer champions and VGUs have far more lore than older ones.

Still hoping for Noxus lore update with Swain. Make it happen, Rito.
