League of LEGENDS

Forgive me if this is the wrong board to post it in, but I figure what I'm about to post has to relate to lore/story :P

The other day, I was playing the game with a couple of my friends. I was talking about what kind of heroes I had wanted to buy/try out. One of my friends cut in and said, "They're champions".

Champions of what? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me that in a game called League of LEGENDS, it's champions that are playing. To me, I always call them heroes, or, in the obvious sense, legends. People like Yasuo, or Wukong could be considered a hero. Someone like Jax, on the other hand, could probably be considered a champion, or a legend.

Just a little food for thought, I guess!

Your friend sound like a dick, you can call them what ever you want legends, Heroes, Champion because in the genre of MOBA these are what we call the people you can play and there is nothing wrong with calling them one or the other.

Champions is pretty much LoLs official name for the characters.

They are called like this because originally the league was a place where nations could settle their disputes through the matches in the league,thus they chose their "champions" who represent their cause to fight for them instead of going into an all-out war. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CombatByChampion

However that was retconned,so it is now more of a leftover of the old lore,but in the end it still symbolizes how they are at the top in terms of combat power.

Calling them heroes also runs into the problem that simply not everyone of them is heroic.I mean no matter how you look at it,someone like Shaco or Khazix will most likely never be seen as a hero by anyone.

However in the end I wouldn't care that much about what to call them,as long as everyone understands what you mean.

I personally just take it as:

They're legends of the world (previously, of the League)
They're Champions of their respective locations (Ionia, Piltover, etc.)

Also when you get that legendary kill, that's what makes you a legend ;-P

Or maybe we, the summoners, are the legends...O.O The champions simply facilitate that...
