Has riot given any indication on which animal they were based on when they were ascended? If not, then could they? It would be really cool to see skins based on how looked originally. It would just be nice to know lorewise either way.

Well current varus is the mix of two humans so we have no idea what he could be. I never thought of the horned owl for aatrox, I like it
GreenLore4 votesWell the other darkin are mixes of humans as well, so thats no excuse for Varus. However I think it was said that since the darkin reconstruct their bodies however they like, so Varus might have chosen to look more like his human self instead of his asceionded form.

Wasn't it said that Varus was more of an assassin amongst the Darkin so it would make sense for Varus to look human than the others.

Jaspers2 votesI'm more on the Owl front for Aatrox (horned owl specifically for Aatrox, fits his wings and wise old things) but I like the idea of bat too. The 'dragon' thing is so cliched.
Varus is anyone's guess, his ghost form in the music vid and spliced body show no signs of anything.

Their bodies are very similar, and they both have horns and wings. I'd like to believe that it was the majestic glory of his former form with angelic wings and white body/armor.
