I like to imagine that Braum is one of the original Iceborn and initially supported Lissandra's efforts to ensure Freljord's security. He was her friend and confidant, offering his strength to protect the then united Freljord. However, as time passed, the Watcher's agenda became clear; they were only interested in controlling the Iceborn to expand their own dominance. Braum tried to convince Lissandra that despite the power and protection granted to Freljordians, they had been reduced to little more than slaves, tools that would be abused and discarded.
Lissandra understood this on some level, but truly believed the benefits offered by the Watcher's outweighed their cost. She did not want to believe her efforts as The Seeker had been wasted, and remained faithful to her original goal and masters. When Avarosa and Serylda began their uprising, Braum knew their rebellion was for the greater good of the people, not the kingdom, and joined them in overthrowing the Watchers.
When the War of the Three Sisters began, and Freljord fell into civil war, Braum left, unwilling to spill the blood of his kin. Move forward to the present day and Lissandra is becoming more overt in her activities, drawing closer to the Watcher's long-awaited release. Hence, the sudden appearance of Braum; he has no intention of participating in the war currently tearing the Freljord apart, but has every intention of preventing Lissandra from realizing her goal.
If he cannot turn Lissandra away from the path she has chosen, he will stop her from causing any more harm.
It is not so much a romantic relationship they share, but a profound friendship. They understood one another, they wanted the best for Freljord and its people, but did not agree on the method of doing so.

Hahaha, well, I was writing about them to be perfectly honest back before Udyr's retcon.
The big thing about Karma is how she is the calm in the tempest, how she is control, how she is this dignified being whose presence is what quells you rather than a big show of power per se. She is everything that Udyr is not, but there is more to her than just her words: She will act on them. She does not rely on words alone, if pushed into the corner and you have a blade brandished against her, she won't bow her head and allow it, she will use the momentum given and use it to her advantage, which Udyr would recognize as someone who practices what they preach, that when at their lowest will not surrender.
She would also not bother him with questions.
One of the big things about Udyr that was lost is I can imagine him despising people asking him "stupid" questions, trying to inch their way into figuring out how or why he thinks and don't readily accept who he is at face value and demand explanations. Karma wouldn't react in such a way, she's the Enlightened One, she can see who Udyr is by him acting as himself, and she doesn't need to poke or prod or do anything else to him, she accepts the beast man as is.
Udyr has a very basic philosophy:
Attack Udyr and he will kill you, survival of the fittest.
Annoy Udyr and he will put you in your place by whatever means necessary.
Talk to Udyr, speak to him as an equal, don't degrade him, and he will respond in kind.
How you carry yourself to Udyr he will return tenfold. If you are polite to him and truly polite, not trying to "win" his friendship, then he will offer you politeness in return.
This in turn is also why Karma can appreciate Udyr: Udyr does not lie. Animals don't lie in the same sense humans do. Just like humans, they camouflage, they ambush, they will lead you on a chase, they will surround you, but they will not whisper to you one thing and then do another. If Udyr says he will do this action, you can bet he will do that action.
Udyr does not make threats, he makes statements.
He is a weird, complicated being in the sense that he sees morality as Blue and Orange rather than Black and White, to the point that Udyr does not lie, he has absolutely no reason to do so. He will speak at face value, say what is exactly on his mind if he bothers to say anything, and will let you know what he thinks of you without question.
He is, although, almost childish in the sense that he will not lie.
He is a breath of fresh air from the political world, and he is this completely different entity really, this is a guy who communes with animals and is one with nature.
If we go with the traditional ideas of Taoism, Udyr is fire and Karma is water, just as the monk who beat Udyr did so by controlling the rage, Karma is one who can speak to Udyr and maintain a healthy relationship without expecting him to be or do anything else other than be Udyr.
Karma would not take so readily to Udyr beyond friendship easily, and Udyr lived in the forests then was raised by celibate monks afterwards. Udyr is someone who will objectively look at someone and decide, in his mind, whether or not they are weak or strong, and why they are either way.
Karma's strength is one he would recognize as something that everyone should have, but do not, while his is the strength that the rules of nature force people to abide by. Udyr's struggle in general would be to accept more of his human nature and the feelings that come with it rather than let himself be swallowed in the maelstrom of bestial entities, while Karma's struggle is the constant uphill battle against people who will take what she offers and throw it back in her face if it helps them, she has to be aware of her surroundings so constantly that she may at times not be able to hear the birds whistle.
Udyr is free, truly free, he is as bound to rules as the clouds are, while Karma has to work within her spectrum and she confines herself in the cage because it is what she needs to do. If she needs to be reminded of the birds, she has a beast man she can turn to who won't question her the who, why, what, when or where, just that she needs that breath and he will give her the space.
I can imagine the two sitting next to one another and not saying a word, but because they are in one another's presence and unafraid, not belittling, not arguing, just sitting in this state of understanding and they are at peace.
And when the two do fight?
Karma does not push back per se, she does not fight rage with rage, she lets it flow. She controls the fire, as water, and respectful of it, keeps it controlled and communes with him, using the same tactics as before. Udyr will not throw a punch or gnash his teeth at someone who refuses to harm him, because they trust him not to harm them. When you give Udyr that trust, what reason would he ever have to betray it?
Sorry if my thoughts are scattered, I'd actually explain a lot more if I could dip into my headcanons and go with the old lore and the like =p
