How would you feel if the Lore team wrote stories where champions actually died?
If they die, they're gone - no more lore for them except in flashbacks. However, this would make events like this tons more exciting. You'll get a feeling of suspense not knowing whether your favorite champ will live or die.
So what do you guys think? Fair trade-off? (Obviously they'd still be playable after death)

I would feel sorry for the newcomers. It's easy to follow the scenario when you're watching TV series or reading the book series. But how will they follow up?
It depends on how the narrative is dealt with. The main problem as having a dude die, i see, is that there is no more story and character progression; but a character that is dead can still progress.
You said flashbacks, and those are not to understimate: a narrative piece placed in the past, in a particular event and time, that tells something new or uncovers a development can have an huge impact on the character and on the story ( like the new MF lore did, in a little degree). Just think about Veigar, for example: we know who he is, but not how and why, what happened to him or around him, and there might be a lot of intresting stuff that happened before becoming what he is. Even if we know what in the end will happen, we don' t know how and there lies intrest. It needs to be pulled off well, however, Sure, few lines of flashbacks are
I find the excuse of him being dead to disable him to be the perfect time to fix his ulti upgrade bugs, for which there were many.
There could possibly be a continuation of the story where Gangplank is actually still alive and somehow became the next Davy Jones (and now a new skin for Gangplank - Davy Jones)
