Summoner recton question and thoughts

This has been bugging me for some time now and honestly I'm just posting so I can get some clarification on this (and anyone else that might be confused). I've been following the recent lore changes, as most of us have, and while I won't express my full disapproval on the changes (I could write a book on what I feel went wrong and what is going on at this point) as there wouldn't be a point. The point has been beaten to death more than Hecarim and Riot seems to stand by what they are doing.

Good for them I suppose on that front, expect for this. If anyone reads the patch notes, which I'm almost positive everyone does, they'll see this at the top: "BY RIOT PWYFF Hi Summoners,..."

At first, I thought that everyone at riot was adjusting to the most jarring and almost 180 like change I've ever seen and that not everyone was aware of the recent chances. I said, "alright, everyone is a little behind that's fine." But then three more patches came out (and two patch rundowns) where the phrase "summoners" were used. To my knowledge, summoners and summoning aren't part of lore or canon anymore.

This irks me for a number of reasons and maybe it's just me. To me, Riot thinks they can just cherry pick when something can be usable or canon despite all the information they have just provided us. That either they really aren't paying attention to the lore, story and basic information that they themselves use, or that communication between Riot's own staff is really, really bad.

I get it, summoners were a cool way to not only immerse players into the game, but to give us unique titles they we can be addressed by. It would be a real shame of for some reason we couldn't be called that anymore because it sure was easily identifiable...

It may seem minor (I mean, it's just the patch notes right?) but it isn't, not to me at least. If they are going to completely change the world they established (which is... for another time) then they have to abide but the new rules which they have made. The rule being, there are no summoners, we are not summoners and (my opinion here) I feel insulted being called a summoner by the people who removed it from existence.

Unless I am wrong about the summoner recton which could be the case. I've been very rather frustrated with the new lore direction and could have misread or misinterpreted what was being said.

If anyone has any clarification or thoughts on the matter, I would be like to hear them.

I've seen that being said by reds before on the previous forums, but took it as "you can call yourselves summoners, there just isn't any summoners anymore"

While annoying to think someone thought that was a good idea, and I still believe that leaving it to the players imagination is a bad move, it was only my imagination. I could be a summoner in hiding or something goofy like that, but that was left to my imagination.

Them using the phrase and term "summoner" means they still recognize the value it holds, but only use it when they need or want it to work.

Speaking of quoting their own statements back at them, I continue to advocate the following line of argument:

If lore and gameplay are officially separate, and the Narrative team is no longer worrying itself with the game, then stop stripping "Summoner" references out of the in-game voicework.

If we're "still Summoners in the game", then let us be Summoners in the game.

Riot has stated that Shurima is the new starting point for canon, and everything before that basically didn't happen. Certain instances they say still occurred, but realistically before Shurima it's just a blank slate. As with a big update like that, I assumed the things that reference summoners in the game (I.E. summoners rift, summoner spells) would be phased out eventually. I personally give more time for that part as it would require them to come up with a new name and work it in.

But this part is relatively simply, they made summoners not exist and told us we were no longer summoners. That is real, that is the new lore that if we have to follow, so do they. Even down to the smallest detail. Either they put back summoners or don't refer to us as summoners.

The Narrative team has severed the link between the game and the lore. This rather remarkable move means that we are back at square zero, before where "we" were when Guinsoo and company were sitting around saying "oh yeah, and let's have them be Summoners fighting in some trial-by-combat magical arena." This game no longer has a storyline behind it. As far as Narrative is concerned, it's some kind of alternate reality.

The Narrative team has abandoned the task of writing a backstory for the game called League of Legends. We are back at square zero, where we have a game and the implicit task of explaining what we're looking at. The Narrative team has relinquished its role in explaining the game itself; it's just writing a bunch of fic based on the characters in the game. Take a moment to process that.

Go ahead, I'll wait.

Let's hold them to that. If they don't want to deal with the "constraint" of the game, fine. They're writing their Runeterra Universe Storytimes off in a corner. Meanwhile, the game is ours. They've even given us a helping hand by remarking that, while Summoners will not appear in their Runeterran Adventure Storytimes fic, we do exist in "the world of the game", which is apparently a different world from the one they're mucking about within.

If they don't want us in the Lore... just call us... and bear with me here... "Players"

I love being a summoner... but they have turned that into a reminder of the old lore and at this point it is an insult to me.

Simply it would be too much of an hassle to find another way to address players and explain it to the playerbase. Just like it was too much of an hassle to write things for the old canon. And they evidently don't like breaking a sweat.
