Okay, I'm probably going to be downvoted for this, but here goes; I'm fine with the Institute of War and the Summoners no longer being part of the world. In the end, I do understand where they're coming from with the retcon, as it needlessly constricts every single champion to be at this specific place, and for some of them it is nothing more than "because reasons".
What I'm NOT okay with, however, is how it was handled.
They decided to get rid of the Institute and everything because they wanted to focus on the stories, and open up more opportunities to tell them. Well, they apparently suck at their job, because they missed a HUGE oppotunity to tell a story around how the Institute is no more. Rather than retcon it, they should have made a story of its downfall. Maybe public opinion shifted, and the League was no longer seen as useful. Maybe one of the many creatures imprisoned within the League broke free. Maybe some country looked upon all the power the League was amassing, and decided to end it. There are tons of ways they could have done it.
And not only do you NOT need to get rid of all the old lore, AND still make new lore unconnected to the League, you could even explore what happens to certain people when the League is no more.
What happens to Twisted Fate when there is no League to protect him from the wrath of Graves?
What about Orianna, who's "programmed" to be a champion? How will she cope?
And what about Shaco, who was kept at the League in a vain attempt to track his whereabouts?
All of this and more could be used or ignored as they saw fit.
What pisses me off most about all this is that not only does it seem hypocritical to claim you want to tell a story when you can't even be arsed to tell a story about how stuff changed in your world, but it is also incredibly LAZY. And it's not like this was an idea that was hard to think of. Several other forumposters have made the exact same points as me, that they should have at least given us an in-lore reason for why the League is no more, so it's unlikely the writing team forgot about this opportunity. They just didn't care.
Writing a story takes time and effort, yes. But that is what they do. Or rather, did. They created a world full of characters, of lands and factions, of creatures and monsters, and they based it all around the central concept of the League of Legends. Removing something like that in a way that makes sense, and which removes the League from any future lore takes effort and thought, but I'm sure they could have pulled it of.
But they didn't. Instead they took the easy way out. The LAZY way out.
It takes effort to actually come up with a reason for why the League doesn't exist anymore, and what events led up to that.
It takes no effort to just toss it away like a used tissue.
I don't care anymore about the lore Riot puts out. Because they obviously didn't care about the League of Legends and the Institute of War.
