Akali lore update/Kinkou thoughts and questions I have.

Hi there! First off, I'm just going to say that since season 3 the Kinkou have been my favorite three characters in league. I loved the idea and the lore behind them so I was both nervous and super excited about the updates they received. Overall, I'm a huge fan of Akali's rework as I thought it was necessary. But with the lore released today and some of the voice lines, I do have questions that I wanted to get some opinions on and if any of the writers for either Shen or Akali see this, them of course as well.

I was going to wait until the AMA, but I figured that here would be a good spot to get opinions from other people before asking them on reddit!

So, going over her lore alone:

I really quite enjoyed this! It expanded on Akali but left the story open for a lot to develop. So really I only have four questions:

  • What is Kennen's role in the Kinkou? He taught Akali, but a certain line sticks out for me: It became clear to all that she would follow her parents’ path—along with the Great Master’s son and appointed successor Shen, she would lead a new generation dedicated to preserving Ionia’s balance.

This sounds like Shen and Akali were to lead the Kinkou together, when I assumed that three of them would lead. But it feels like they left out Kennen for a reason. I understand that this likely can't be answered because now Kennen needs an update...but where is he?

Along with that, does that mean that Akali and Shen were suppose to be partners in running the Kinkou? I had always assumed Kennen and Akali answered to Shen and he was the sole leader. But this sounds as if they were suppose to do everything together?

Finally, I just want to know more about Akali's mother and father. They were named, but is her mother still alive? Is this why she hates Zed so much? Because she blames Zed for her father's death?

Now questions/thoughts on her VO:

I really like her voice, I know that its received a lot of mix reaction but I really am a fan. I do like the sass though I wish there was a bit more story related stuff. That said, I did find her reactions towards Shen/Kennen/Zed interesting. Everything else seemed to be more for laughs/show off her personality, with Kayn's line seeming to be more of a funny throw away line and Kat's...well! We don't quite know so perhaps Ill eat that statement at some point! But for now, I'll just say everything else besides those three were mostly just for laughs/taunts/show her personality.

I feel like her voice lines between Shen and Zed are kinda telling though. With Zed, I felt like there was actual hatred behind her voice. Excitement to be the one to end him and real revenge. With Shen, it seemed more like lashing out, but not against him. More against his choices. It was as if she was bringing up old arguments:

"Our will's.....do not align!"

"You prune the tree. I'm going to pull up some weeds."

But it felt like they carried less hatred, even when striking him she seems to be trying to convince herself.

"This is necessary"

But, there is two things that kinda took me off guard and lead to my questions:

She seems rather cold towards Kennen and Shen. I know that this should be taken with a grain of salt as Rakan even celebrates being single after killing Xayah and in lore that likely not be the case. But still? When she kills Kennen she talks about how much she likes him but brushes it off so casually. Then when she kills Shen, she does something very similar. I'm wondering if this is just a case similar to Rakan celebrating his single life or if there is more to it?

It also leaves the question. How do they feel about each other now? I know this was answered already in a discord (Screenshot was posted and I can grab the link and edit this if necessary) Where they still like each other but can't agree on methods, but with how cold these voice lines were I was hoping for something a bit more detailed. How does she view Shen? Kennen?

On top of that, will we see how Shen/Kennen take this? I doubt we will see Kennen anytime soon (Sadly) but I would like to at least get an idea of how Shen is handling things. I imagine that while he let his student leave, it must hurt. She was his student, I imagine they were extremely close to some degree and that he has to care about her. While Shen is able to push aside emotions, I do like to think that he still feels them and they are more buried then actually "Gone". He is just a man after all.

How did this affect them? Will we get any info on Kennen's state soon? Will Shen question the order at all with both Zed turning traitor and Akali leaving?

On another note, Im just curious. How old are Kennen and Shen? Akali is 19 as confirmed by Reav but she was born during the time Master Kusho was in charge? Kennen taught her as a child? I just am generally curious about this one. Is kennen thousands of years old? Is he the Yoda to all this?

Finally, perhaps the most important question I have. Will we see more? We got that MF comic that was fantastic to give us an update on both her and Bilgewater. I just like to know that there is going to be more at some point. I worry at times with things like the Void Invasion, Mord's return, the evil Swain sees, the Demacian/Noxian war, The bilgewater civil war....that maybe we won't see these stories reach an ending. As someone who loves stories, someone who loves writing and loves the world that is being built brick by brick, I get a bit nervous at times wondering if we will ever get a conclusion to any of these stories. Even her lore left us at a cliff hanger with the idea that she might return to the Kinkou. But how will we know? I imagine that wouldn't be for at few years at least, (But I don't know that, I didn't write her lore so everything I think could be wrong).

So, I guess this is more directed to any rioter. But will we ever get an end to these stories?

What is Kennen's role in the Kinkou?

He really needs that lore update.

For now, I'd assume he's still tasked with Coursing the Sun, but it seems like Coursing the Sun doesn't have the same "leadership" type of deal behind it. I'm guessing the idea of a Triumvirate where all three members are equal is gone, and the current hierarchy of the Kinkou is Shen as the leader, Akali as the second-in-command, and Kennen being Akali's subordinate.

With Akali now having left the Kinkou, Kennen might be the new second-in-command. Until a new Fist of Shadow is found at least.

She seems rather cold towards Kennen and Shen. I know that this should be taken with a grain of salt as Rakan even celebrates being single after killing Xayah and in lore that likely not be the case. I'm guessing this is just interactions for the sake of interaction. I don't think Akali would ever be willing to kill the one that helped her grow up (Kennen) nor the one she trained under for most of her life (Shen), unless, they completely stand in her way for whatever reason.

The possibility is there, considering physical size isn't really a thing to consider when it comes to the age of a Yordle. Although, thousands of years seems like a gross over exaggeration.

Since he was only described as a child when he ran up the Placidium wall (which, was what got him into the Kinkou Order to begin with), he was probably only a young adult when Akali was born. At least, by human standards.

I would have liked for her to be fonder towards Kennen he's like that friend that you grow apart from when you mature into adulthood but there is enough combined history that whenever you do meet up it's like old times. I think Riot was going for that but missed the mark.

I did expect her to leave the Kinkou and was looking forward to her being frustrated with Shen but not outright hating him. This also could have been better.
