What is Aatrox's skin described as?

Looking at Aatrox , I've been wondering what exactly is he made out of. To me it looks like it's carapace, with a rocky feature, but I can't quite find the perfect word or better description for it. It would help a lot if I could some of your insights about him since there's still not much known about the darkin and their lore/past.
