I was wondering why sheep and wolf have really strong red highlights. I don't really see anything red that would cause those highlights to appear so think it's for some kind of artistic reason. The blue and red highlights kind of make it look like those 3D glasses pictures.
I think it is to give the impression that they are strange, ethereal creatures. Their image is supposed to look weird and off-putting, after all they are death incarnate. That's how I interpret that, anyway.
My favorite thing about the splash is the crown the guy was wearing. It represents the fact that no matter how much or how little you have, death will still come for you.
Here's my two cents, from the technical point of view.
When I look at those two, I see they are mostly black and white, with only purple and blue as "real" colours in their design. Perhaps they added red highlights to balance that palette in the splash, otherwise it would have been dull to look at.
