Possible Story Meta Events?

Let me start by saying that I am by no means a good critic with limited game experience.

In League of Legends, the world of Runeterra has always seemed like a place off in the distance. Yes we know that Ash and Lissandra and Sejuani have a beef in the Freljord and Victor and Jayce hate each other and whatnot. All of the champions have at least some sort of established lore and/or faction or rivalry at their launches. What i think is necessary is a large-scale, lore-friendly meta event that incorporates all of these factions into a playable medium. We have seen that Riot is completely open to doing short term new game style snid-bits of fun content such as all-for-one or nemesis draft or that one 6v6 that i forgot the name of. What i mean is something like ascension, but to the point of bringing long term narrative change into the lore. When Lissandra came out there was that quest system between the icy ladies that hinted at some sort of meta conflict, but no lasting impression on an actual story arch.

Story has always had its presence in the LoL community, but never has it been any sort of frontline for game content. I remember a while ago before the new interface there was a "News" button somewhere on the client where a mock newspaper would show the "current events" in Runeterra. To my knowledge, that button is missing now (or i just can't find it), but while it was there, all that i can remember it ever reporting was something about how Swain had killed the last leader of Demacia and taken his place at the top. This same article was there for many months if i remember correctly, leading me to believe that the story aspect of development did not come too high on the priority list at Riot, which i know isn't the case. I for one want to get at least a little immersion while I'm playing; enough to feel like the champions i'm playing have an identity instead of just being created for the sole purpose of entertaining players with new abilities (which is still extremely important i should add).

But how can you create a story arch in such a massive multiplayer persistent world? How do you make something that creates challenge and conflict between players, yet still keeps a level of immersion? I keep returning to the example of the "WAR" update for TeamFortess 2. For those of you who dont know, this was a meta event that counted how many times one class (the Demoman) kills another (the Soldier) and vice versa. At the end of this Meta event, which took place over a few months, the class with the most kills on the other got access to some new equipable content. This kept the flow of gameplay relatively consistent, and added an element of... lets say "meaning" to the mindless slaughter that is TF2. This kind of thing could easily be done in the fashion of one of these new game styles that we've been getting. Core game victory conditions could be the same so that "winning" is still the main goal of the players, instead of "how many times Darius kills Teemo with his ult" so as to not distract players that are playing the new game simply to have fun and immerse from the players playing specifically for the outcome/rewards of the meta event.

The meta event itself could be something along the lines of factions joining together and waging war on another faction. An obvious problem with this is that to lump all factions up into a sort of 1v1 meta battle would inhibit players freedom of choosing a champion that they like based on their faction and choosing a champion that they like based on their kit, not to mention the teamcomps that would be severely inhibited based on faction/champion rivalries (Thresh/Lucian, Graves/TF, etc.). Even so, this gametype would obviously not have any effect on the fact that normal summoners rift is one button next to it and people more interested in the down and dirty strategic gameplay can go right ahead and keep playing. All i want is a little bit of lore reinforcement. And the rewards for the meta event could even be something like more skins or champions for riot to push out, i.e. more content (and more spent rp) for all: win/win. ^Not to say that Riot doesn't have their hands full with producing content right now. This would just be an easy medium for more.

tl;dr: would be cool for riot to implement a meta event that incorporates the lore of Runeterra

So far from what Riot has said they are planning on more lore themed game modes like ascension,so if that's what you're looking for you're gonna get it.

Unfortunately if you're looking for anything more than that, you won't find it in league of legends. Riot has said before that they believe audience interaction with the story leads to weak storytelling. Riot is interested in telling their own awesome stories, they're not very interested in any sort of community interaction.

Wait, i'm confused.

Are you perhaps saying you want a campaign mode?

Every time Viktor wins the event, he should get a new hexcore upgrade path. Tank and Melee Viktor hexes, Riot!!

So like the Khazix versus Rengar event? If so, then yeah, I agree. We definitely need more stuff like that.
