Question about Karthus Lore

The Pentakill lore says the Mordekaiser killed Karthus and yet Karthus' lore makes it sound like he might have killed himself. Is the Pentakill lore canon?

I think the Pentakill lore is more like AU. Think of most skins as alternate canon or non-canon. Mostly just for fun. It would be weird if there were just a bunch of champions at a pool party (though still fun).

pentakill isn't canon anymore,if it was then runeterra would be currently lying in ashes since pentakill was literally wrecking everything.

I'll try to explain:

A couple of years ago, then Narrative lead/head writer Christina "Kitae" Norman announced that there was a concept called "skin canon" where every skin had a story attached to it. This idea, if it is still followed, led to such skins lines as "Battlecast" (not including Xerath), "Mecha" (not including Kha'Zix) and "Arcade" (including Final Boss Veigar).

Apparently, Pentakill's skin canon was expanded upon when the "Pentakill" album was released. It's not "canon" as far as the lore goes, though. Morde wasn't the one who killed Karthus in the "real" story (not that we're going to know for sure before the new year comes given Narrative's production pace).

[Side note: The Pentakill event was probably the best example of Riot doing something "community based." Not promoting something for the sake of a skin or new champion, but something cool "just because."]

The Pentakill lore is not cannon, because otherwise Mordekaisers default weapon would be a guitar

yeah i think i prefer the pentakill canon, hue Mordekaiser

That's not canon. What it is now is that he's a lich that was once a mortal man living in Valoran. Now he's on the Shadow Isles.
