New champions reveals feel incredibly underwhelming because of the new reveal pages

Old champion reveal pages did an amazing job at showcasing the new characters. There was so much work put into it in order to let us have a glimpse of the visual identity of the champions as well as their backstory and their gameplay.

Now the new pages feel completely dull, they inspire no emotion or don't show anything that could help us relate to the characters and enter their world.

Just go back and watch the old reveal page of Aurelion Sol for example and compare it to what we got for Qiyana, Morde and Yuumi.

Old champion reveals used to completely blow my mind and get me super excited to get to know more about the character. Instead when I open a reveal page now I feel completely indifferent. Nothing in Qiyana's reveal page makes me want to know more about her, sure her abilities look cool but there's nothing to show me that the CHARACTER is interesting. It feels like all the magic is gone and I'd really hate it if all the future champions/reworks were to be revealed in the same underwhelming way.

Riot called they wanted more resources on esports

Remember when Taliyah, Sol, Jhin, Xayah, Rakan and Kled had CG Videos as a teaser? Now we get an animated 'still' and 'in game' video instead showing off abilities at the same time. I think Aatrox was the last CG teaser, not even Kayle and Morgana were worthy of one.

Didn't even think about this until seeing this post.

Went back and rewatched Jhin's Trailer. Then saw Qiyana's.. whatever the hell that was.

Underwhelming is an understatement. All I got out of Qiyana's.. "animated still".. is that she's thicc. And that's good, but not great.

Jhin's trailer was better than great.

Yeah, i miss those too. I've noticed recently that i often don't even notice there's a new champion added to the game until they're picked in one i play - simply because all we get is a picture of them saying "announced" or "revealed" and then there's a youtube video and literally nothing else until they drop into live servers.

On the other hand...

Those pages take resources. This community (not saying you, necessarily) often complains that they spend time making fancy web pages instead of fixing balance issues. And while those teams are different, you still have to pay for it. If they've determined that those pages aren't super valuable to most players, then it makes sense to stop spending dev time (which costs money) on them.

Remember the Illaoi teaser before realase? We even got a mini-game about her.

I joined League when my friends showed me Jhin's teasers and reveal page, they were stunning to say the least.

I find it odd from Riot to change their way like this, I mean I get it that it takes time and effort to make them, but they were so cool, I kinda miss them.

Disagree. The reveal pages weren't what drew people in: It was the teasers and in-game hype building.

Let's take champions like Bard and Kindred for example. While small, they had small effects in-game that coincided with their upcoming release. Tahm's laugh was in the river. Kled had "HAVE U SEEN SKARRL?" posters all over the LCS. These small teasers went to great lengths to reveal champions but none take the cake quite like Jhin.

Jhin, IMO, was and has been Riot's most successful champion. Perhaps ever. And part of this was due to Jhin's initial reveal: Shocking portraits of champions we know and love "dying" by his hand. People were scouring code for information. People were dissecting the project name "Deadeye" and comparing it to religious myth and possible teasers. Everything about Jhin culminated in a short video, where we finally get a PEEK at his mask, followed by his reveal later. Jhin's impact would have been greatly lessened, had he just had the video and release page.

New champions are the same: They often get one picture and a reveal about 4 days later. Champions are not "teased" anymore, they get a trailer and a gameplay reveal. The "magic" is gone.

To an extent I understand this, as you can hold onto a teaser for TOO long and ruin the surprise (See: Sombra). That said, I think Riot needs not to slow down releases but build up hype more. Trailers, in-game videos, art, gimmicks. Anything to build up growing hype for the eventual reveal. After all: Hype is nothing without speculation and community engagement.

Went from inspired formatting like Aurelion Sol's reveal to a more professional and simplistic reveal page formatting like Sylas, Akali, etc and now to an incredibly simplistic and under whelming formatting that is Qiyana.

Maybe they fired the guy/gal who did those, besides minmizing the effort put into the reveals means they can pour more resources into prestige skins or whatever it is riot employees do all day.

Agreed, i really miss the old reveal pages.

DarkSoul19946/8/2019, 11:52:42 PM1 votes

I swear the format used to be vague teaser ---> full reveal like 2 weeks later.

Now the teaser reveals quite a bit and we get the full reveal like 2 days later and it's all really generic. We used to get really cool reveal pages and extra content.

Cant agree more, reveal pages were great and should come back.

Kind of sad I missed out on all the really cool champion reveals because I either wasn't here or didn't care.

Emo Twink6/9/2019, 5:18:41 AM1 votes

I made a similar thread, but focused more on no login screens for champs. It's such a sad thing, I fucking love reveal pages! and login screens ! Now we dont have anything like that and it's so sad...

I miss the Phreak documentary on it

I still don't think that Qiyana is in her final form. I still hope that Riot games will pull a Gangplank on us and she will get corrupted or something and we will get an actually good character instead of whatever this is.

mrmeddyman6/9/2019, 5:29:50 AM1 votes

No Reveal Pages No Animated/Poorly Done Login Screens All new Champion Launch Skins doubling as Event Skins No Post-Launch Champion Insights THERE'S JUST NO CEREMONY!!!

I'm hoping this is just due to the fact Yuumi, Morde and Qiyana are so close together that riot didn't have a choice due to a lack of freed up resources because art departments' been getting sloppy lately.

AND THIS IS THE DEPARTMENT I LIKE MOST

Honestly, the reveal pages are just the newest thing to become bland. I've been saying for a long time now that champion reveals are just getting more and more boring now.

Olath Quortek6/9/2019, 5:22:27 PM1 votes

I second this, the new format is very underwhelming...
