Dear Riot, Some Thought and Questions on Skin Splash Art

This one has been in my doubt for a long time.

League has become a bigger game year by year. Professional matches were held on international levels. Whatever is in this game will be presented to the world by various means.

At this point, it is fairly important to make the visual part of this game look decent. Riot knew this very clearly, then we start having more and more visual updates.

Late last year, we experienced a vast wave of updates for classic champion splash art, some champion VUs, and a new SR. Let alone those awesome splash arts for new skins. How many of you are amazed by Winter Wonder Orianna and Blood Moon Elise?

Then, when i look at the brand new Blood Moon Bundle, something painfully caught my eyes.

Oh, my good old Shen, if only your Blood Moon splash art could be......newer.

Yes, I have no doubt that some people like that BM Shen splash art, and the artist had done a lot of hard work on that. Yet, when you put all the BM skin together, BM Shen just stood out so much.

I just cannot click that purchase button.

BM Shen is just one example. So many other old skin splash art are aging further and further as we speak.

So, dear riot, I rarely see any intention or planning from you guys to give new splash art to those old skins.

WHY?

Is there any drawbacks in terms of contract with the artists of those existing skin splash art? As splash art of classic skins are constantly being updated, I don't see that being a very big issue.

Yes, there was one time that you guys switch some old skin splash art with the ones being used in Chinese server. And why you think the Chinese company who runs LOL in China decided to make their own splash art for those old skins?

Obviously, the original splash art of those skins doesn't meet their standard. Skins, frankly speaking, are commodities to be sold for money. So they decided to wrap these commodities with more decent packages for better selling record.

And until now, Riot have not reverted those adopted Chinese splash art. Enough said.

Yes, I understand that Riot's art team have some many tasks at hand. I am not asking the art team to prioritize skin splash art update more than other tasks. However, there are so many good opportunities to tune up some particular skin splash art.

For example, BM Shen, again.

When skins of some certain theme have reached a certain quantity, say, 5 as a team, there comes the perfect timing to promote that theme as a brand. Atm, no other skin brands are hotter than Blood Moon, I must say. So, why not giving it a final touch by making a brand new splash art for BM Shen to wrap the whole thing up nicely? I don't know how exactly it might cost Riot, but I think it really worth the effort.

And again, this is but one example.

That's all I'm gonna say for this topic, and sorry about the wall of text. Please share thought, and hope for a Red Post with me.

Thanks.

First they'll take care of the classic skin splash arts. While many champs got already an updated one, there are still some champs who have a rather old splash art like Irelia or Kennen

I mean ok one could hope that these champs will receive a visual update soon and that they don't want to spoil these for us until they are finished, but the fact remains that some splash arts still need an update.

Once the classic skins are done, then they will target the skin-splashes and there are a lot who have it rough. The worst offenders however are most likely the skin splash arts of updated champs whose splashes don't look like the ingame-equivalent at all(just look at junkyard trundles splash and his ingame model!),so I guess these would have priority(not necessarily but it is a possibility)

They are focusing on updating all the base splashes first. And they still have quite a long way to go. Until they are finished they will not update skin art and there are far worse offenders than BM Shen. They prioritize what needs an update based on how outdated it is, how much they will earn on that comes secondary or not at all. We are talking about visual coherency here, the image of the game, money hardly plays any role at that unless they don't have it (not the case here).

I fully agree. Splash art is a very important part when it comes to choosing skins. Yes, in-game aesthetics are the whole point of them, but when you're loading the game with your teammates, it's kind of painful to look at sometimes when you have beautiful splashwork beside the old ones. And since the in-game models get updated every so often, the skins start to look less and less like their respective splashes.

The mystery gift just recently is probably what got me thinking about this. I got Commando Xin Zhao, and while I think the in-game model is good, the splash art just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
