Can they please stop killing characters and replace them with new ones

For one, Im not saying the new story writers or lore teams are bad. I think they can write great stuff. Some of this new lore wouldnt even be bad if it was stand alone lore for a new character.

My problem is, why do they have to completely replace characters every single time we get an "update"

Varus is now basically removed from league and replaced with a hunter. Why couldnt they just expand his old lore? You couldve made him a hunter that became an Ionian archer, which defended the temple during the invasion of noxus? He couldve still been the family man that lost his village and family?

I dont like this. Yordles were a fun race and now they are basically prosecuted and dont even look like yordles anymore. Volibear is now a god for some reason. (okay he wasnt very popular at all and had few lore in general, but still.)

Rammus is turning into a demi god now. Why cant it be more like Caitlyns and Viktors lore? Essentially the same, just expanded upon and with more flavour added.

New full lore is now out. I'll break down the differences for you:

Differences:

  • Varus is the name of the Darkin
  • A Darkin was in the Pit of Pallas as opposed to some random gloppy stuff
  • Three beings make up Varus: Valmar and Kai (hunters/hosts), and the darkin itself
  • The three are struggling for control
  • Valmar was gay for Kai, instead of having a wife and kids
  • Valmar and Kai didn't live to guard the temple, instead they only happened to be there completing an old tradition.
  • Varus has a sister (female Darkin maybe)
  • They aim for different things: The Darkin aims to wake his kin, the hunters want to separate from Varus to live the rest of their lives together.

Same:

  • Hosts are still Ionian
  • Host's lover was still killed by Noxians
  • The Pit of Pallas is still cannon (Pallas was retconned to the name of the city instead)
  • Host still voluntarily accepted the being in the Pit for vengeance
  • Still was an Archer
  • Still defended the Temple when it was under attack.
  • Still wears demon pants
  • Still slaughtered Noxians out of vengeance after fusing.

I hope this goes to show that characters weren't thrown out, only made more cohesive with the rest of the world.

He isnt Varus anymore, who was a legendary Ionian arher tasked with guarding a temple during an ivasion and then deciding to abandon his task to help defend his family, which turned out to be too late.

You can make 2 lists of some random details and put them together but they essentially changed his entire core other than him being an archer and having a temple "corrupt" him

I think Kai and Valmar wouldve worked great as completely new characters instead of completely removing original familyman varus

The only things you seem to care about is his position: Ionian Archer guarding a temple, his decision to abandon his post, and the fact that he had a wife and kids. I counter that he did not abandon his task in the old lore, but stayed to protect the temple and only left when the invading force was killed. In the new lore, he still fought against the Noxians invading the temple, his wife was replaced by a male lover, (still provides the same drive I think) and the lover was still mortally wounded. The only key difference was that instead of surrendering to the pit purely out of vengeance, he did so to save his mate's life. He's still a "family man" because Valmar's only family at the time was Kai.

You're basically saying that just because he doesn't have kids means, that what he has can't be considered a family. His child never interacted with him in the story, nor did his wife. You could replace them with almost anything considered dear to a person for narrative's sake: best friend, male lover, pet, father, village, and it wouldn't affect the justification for his drive in any way.

This is true, but after reading some comments here and elsewhere it seems the largest grievance with Varus’ new lore is not that he no longer has a wife or kids but rather that Varus himself is the Darkin now rather than the man who the tragedy centers around.

Except the Summoner judgement has been retconned for years. It holds absolutely no credence to changing the current lore, and is only brought up as evidence to prove the point of people wearing rose-tinted glasses.

All of his lore is retconned except the new lore so going by that logic no one would care about the changes made to the character. Which is obviously false due to the numerous posts on the board.

your missing the point. you are just looking at what he is saying rather then understanding it

varus from before was a man who had ties, he chose between responsibility, and because of it lost his family, this varus is gone, and instead we get. 2 people here now, 1 almost dies so is thrown into pit by boyfriend and then both get absorbed by a darkin named varus

like, looking back at ahris lore, she was just SLIGHTLY changed, they modified her from being this free spirit, to being a more magical vastayan. this is okay, its modernizing lore rather then leaving it vague

what they did to varus was entirely remove his motivations for being the noxian killing machine, and add a DIFFERENT reason. and then ontop of that throw in another group of mother fuckers who just make this three way host/parasite relationship

like you think that because the end result is the same (that is varus being this revenant of vengence) that its fine. but you dont understand that what CAUSES that end result is extremely important to the identity of a character. essentially they changed the entire identity of varus while maintaining the end result. which on the surface looks fine. but if you think about it you are just going to go. "wait . . . why didnt they just make a new champion?"

like seriously this is a really cool concept, but i feel they went about it in entirely the wrong way

Idk if you've read ALL of Varus' lore but he does interact with his child, although not sure if I remember anything about his wife.

Old Varus used to be a family man, in his original lore.

His family was only there to provide a justification for his fall. It didn't particularly affected his personality, not that he actually had one.

Never in his in-game lines he mourns his family, and in his lore he never laments their loss. His characterization is only vengeance, and never a family man.

Doesn't have the same effect because his lover lives on, rather than be dead and the feeling of loss exist.

Props to you lore lovers. I've been playing since season 1 and I have no idea what the lore backgrounds for every champion is. Not even my mains.

Do you actually think tencent has a hand in the lore of the game? Lore which almost nobody cares about? You think riot re writes lore for profit? Bruh.... League of Legends has literally no reason to care about lore, and the only reason they do care about it at all is because the devs care about the lore. Not because of monetary gains LUL. Of all the things you could argue that tencent might be in control of over riot, lore is literally the last on thing on the list.

In his updated lore Shurimans believe him to be an Ascendant (like Nasus, Renekton, Xerath, and Azir), or some other spirit/deity, and as such worship him.

Well, some champions take up too much room for other champions not to step on their toes. Eg. Poppy used to be a black smith, delivery girl, ambassador, and a tough and nails yordle. Now she is just a delivery girl, which has opened up room for a black smith champion Ornn, an ambassador, and a super serious yordle.

While other time a champion needs to change to fit into the new lore, this will be your Varuses, your Warwicks, etc.

Well, let's say they make an Indiana Jones type character, who is also a super genius, who is also the chosen one and holds an ancient godlike weapon like Thor, who is also a Goku analog who specialized in energy blasts and blinks around. Wouldn't you say that character is using one too many archetypes?

Exactly the reason why when he gets a rework, they will focus on fleshing out what he is suppose to be, rather than everything he is trying to be. They will probably keep the spammy kit of his, but change things to better fit the Indiana archetype. Maybe change his light bow into a light whip.

Like instead of a blink that also shoots a laser, Ez could cause a portal to open and something like a booby trap shoots at him and he dives out of the way. Like a projectile that shoots from the pointer to Ez who then gets a roll.

Yeah its literally impossible to have 2 blacksmiths in a game. Imagine if that happened.

Or imagine if we had multiple bird themed champions instead of one.

Well Poppy's gameplay had nothing to do with smithing. So it would make sense to change her a bit so another champion can better realize the blacksmith role.

I actually really liked the new lore for Rammus. They gave a "hey this champ exists, cool" lore to the most blank and chill champ. Also, don't complain about Rammus being an Ascended or whatever, he was literally nothing before. And it's funny to think that Rammus is a big deal to some Shurimans, but Rammus himself is just "is it food? no? cool, cya".
