Why Did They Update Aatrox?
He looks fine, his model looks modern, why was he prioritized over other champs?

Were you living under a rock all this time? I remember many people complaining about Aatrox, way before 2016. Aatrox has been in the gutter ever since (approximately) his release. Only very recently did he get any love from Riot.
They've been considering a rework for a long time, way before Evelynn actually. The fact is he wasn't prioritized over anyone else. If anything it's the other way around.
While on that topic. Riot's plan was not to change his model, as Reav3 stated when he first mentioned this. However, during the update process, they felt the need to update his model too to better communicate what Aatrox is about.
He is going to have new abilities that need new animations, and it's easier to make a new model built for the animations than force the existing model to do the new animations.
The reason why he is getting new abilities is because his gameplay is "feast or famine" which is something Riot is trying to get rid of. So he will be able to keep up when behind, and a not snowball as hard when he is ahead.
Well, he was originally slated for a full gameplay update with minor visual changes to support the new kit. My guess is that they realized how much work they already put into it & just decided to go all out.
I don't think the model is the problem.
I think it's the gameplay part that people have been complaining about for literal years.
Reworks aren't ONLY about visuals, you know?

The gameplay is the problem,not the visuals(hence why his design barely changed).
They gave him a full Gameplay rework(so a GU on the scale similar to those of Swain,Galio,etc.),but then realized that the new kit looked out of place for Aatroxs current model,which is why it gets changed as well.
Incoming People who don’t play aatrox complain about how bad he was and he needed an update, and everyone is all of a sudden an expert on aatrox you guys need to just hush and stop agreeing with everything rito does. Aatrox was the most balanced top laner his entire kit was built around balance and the true power of the 1v1. Last thing we need is another generic looking spam champ too lane where you can smack your head against the keyboard and win a 1v3 cough ireilia (new/old) cough
