So why is Sona's Odyssey Emote the one you locked away?

Please, Riot, explain to me what exactly was going through your heads when you decided to screw over all of Sona's fans with this asinine decision.

You reveal the emote, only for us to find out that it's only available through this content creator program. Why? Why would you decide this is okay?

Jinx fans, Yasuo fans, Malphite fans, they all get their emotes, but I guess Sona's fans can go jump off a pier because now we have to pray we get them from content creators we very well may not give a shit about. It's completely arbitrary, asinine, and unfair.

Each content creator got 50 codes? And some of those will be used on friends and loved ones, so that's even less, in a region with millions of players? Are you kidding me? Do you have any clue how many people want her emote?

The entire Sona community is livid with you right now. You dangled something nice in our face then took it away. Even though there are people literally begging you to take their money for the emote.

If you wanted to make creator exclusive content, then maybe those 3 unnecessary Jinx emotes would have worked? Or better yet, instead of screwing over fans of s champion, how about you made an emote that actually has something to do with this program?

If you wanted to make an Odyssey emote for this program, then it should have been a general emote for Odyssey, or a special Morning Star emote. There was no reason to screw Sona's fans over like this.

Just give us the Sona emote, Riot. Let us give you our money for it. There is zero reason for you to say no.

And before anyone says "Who cares, it's just Sona", wait until content for the champion you love is locked away behind bullshit like this. Then you'll care

My guess for the thought process: So, we want to take an emote of an actually popular champion, so people appreciate it. That would already exclude Malphite from the possible list, leaving us with: Jinx Yasuo Sona

Then again, they don't want to give away the most popular option of these 3, since they want to make money with the others. GG EZ, lock away Sona!

The best part, in my opinion, is how Riot decided to not only do a skin and an emote, but they also gave Jinx A N O T H E R mother fucking figure, as if she hadn't already been included in both other series collections in the past, and none of them stopped to think, 'hey maybe we should make the Jinx emote the exclusive one? Yknow, since she's also getting all of this other content in addition to it?'

100% agree here. Locking only this emote behind the Content Creator System is not a good move for several reasons.

  • This emote was not initially marketed as being part of the CC system.

Revealing this emote (which was obviously created as part of a set) and then revealing that it's an exclusive give away feels like you're actively taking something away from people who wanted to buy it as opposed to just debuting it as part of this new system. The way this was timed and the emote that is being given away feels like the Odyssey Emotes were created and all meant to be sold in the shop, but then Riot realized they had this new CC partner system and decided to pick one to put behind it instead of creating one specifically for it.

  • The CC Partner system has not been advertised as having emotes.

This may seem nit-picky, but the announcement of the system says nothing about emotes, only chromas. While this may not seem like too much of a difference to some, emotes can be used regardless of champion whereas chromas are more niche (skin specific) and less noticeable overall.

  • It doesn't accomplish what the CC Partner system was meant to do in the first place.

The whole point of the partner system was to incentivize people for watching and engaging with League's wide variety of different streamers/youtubers/etc. The issue with making the first step into this giveaway system something like this is it doesn't really reward that. What this does is creates a frenzy of people searching for any hint of someone doing a giveaway and joining/following/retweeting for the giveaway itself and then leaving. I have League of Legends youtubers and streamers that I watch personally, but this didn't feel like it encouraged me to find new creators at all. It felt like I was being forced to scour different creators twitters, and retweet/follow to get so much as a chance to get the emote.

I wholeheartedly feel for the Sona main community right now because I've been a part of it for the past three seasons. While you personally may not care because you don't play Sona, the fact that this emote can be locked away behind the CC system is setting the precedent that any champion emote (or even skin) can be locked behind it in the future. I'm fine with giving content creators their own exclusive emotes that their fans can enjoy. I'm fine with making emotes part of a bundle for that matter. I'm not fine with making an emote that everyone can enjoy limited and exclusively tied to a system that is generally completely luck based. People are literally asking to spend their money and Riot is effectively saying "No thanks. We'd rather piss off a whole lot of people by giving extremely limited quantities of this product to some of our fans for them to give away at their discretion".

So if any Rioter is reading this, will we ever get this emote on the shop or will it be forever locked away behind the CC partner program? It makes very little sense to keep it that way at this point, but if that's the way it's gonna be that's the way it's gonna be. Just please don't do this to any other specific champion. It's been a big slap in the face to Sona players, so hopefully this feedback helps avoid the same mistake down the road.

I would even not be so upset if Riot at least plunked this emote into the Honor capsules along with Gray WW and Medieval Twitch. At least then there's the ghost of a chance to obtain it.

Ziggs is getting it unfairly as well. I'm pretty pissed about the Sona emote as I'm a Sona main and I love her to death, but I feel for anyone who wanted Ziggs related content as well.

I honestly think that this entire thing was set up badly, and should have been put on the PBE first to test for feedback. This way, situations like THIS don't happen. Want some CC value? Make an emote that's NOT character specific. Make it flashy. Make it cool. Make it better than the character emotes. THIS kind of emote would be wanted by almost anyone, and not screw some mains out of their champion's emotes because of some sort of CC that was vaguely described. There's NO list on the CC and there's no way to find it outside of word of mouth. You want to support these CC's? You want them to get known so they support your brand? Well how in the everloving hell are we supposed to find them outside of a "league of legends content creators" Google search?

That last question may seem counter-intuitive to my current stance, but here's how it applies: You're giving these CC's rewards to hand out to people who currently watch them. These rewards come from people that most people don't know or have heard of ONE TO TWO. What you're doing is supporting those fans of THOSE content creators for being fans of THEIR content, not League specifically.

As an example, I only know of RossBoomSocks and MagikarpUsedFly. I know of no others. I have no need to go to others. Why would I? I'm happy where I am. You want to spread the word, I get it. What you're doing with the CC program is a cool way to spread the good word of your product and help promote these creators and help them grow to spread your product as well. It's advertising. You've messed up though and are now getting a ton of backlash. In hindsight, you could have done a lot of things but hindsight is 20/20. So here's how you do this.

  1. You apologize. 100% apologize. 1000%. Many fans have been pissed off about this, and it's likely that a lot of sales may have been lost.
  2. You find a way to make this right. My suggestion: Make a special emote that these codes unlock AS WELL, like the super cool shiny and flashy one that I said earlier.
  3. NOW release the Sona one on the shop. You can't just put it out on the shop without REALLY compensating those with the codes and say "oops" as the CC's at that point would feel like they've given out codes for free emotes rather than something special.
  4. You look at Ziggs and think about it. Why? I understand that there's the context of the story and all, but that puts people in a somewhat similar situation as Sona here. They now have to go through hoops to get THEIR stuff, as opposed to other people. Yes, I understand at that point his is free, but you can't even BUY IT.
  5. As a gorram business, stop declining the ability to have people give you their money. Warframe did that exact thing, but for a different, and respected reason. Here, you've locked people out of buying Sona related content, but also Ziggs.

To end it all simply: You dun goofed. You might want to dispatch some PR to these boards and have them really take a look at this. Of course, they can say "backlash will only last a little while, it'll blow over", which is likely true, but you've caused a massive problem.

Edit: I just played some Odyssey with someone who had a MiniLadd icon. I missed out on it but that's MY fault. However, what you've done with that is the RIGHT thing to be doing with CC's. Make specialized things that aren't character specific and sell your brand through them.

I honestly have nothing to add, everyone basically said it. I haven't been playing League that long, about 2 yrs-ish, but aside from Jinx, Sona was my go to champ. I was on a hiatus these past few months, but when my spouse showed me the new Odyssey skins (because he knew I love those two), I literally flipped and went on to play screaming, "OMG, MY GIRLS! MY GIRLS GOT NEW SKINS!!" I thought it was weird that only Yasuo, Malphite, and Jinx got emotes. But then I saw that the Sona emote was an exclusive....Me being the non-confrontational type I just kinda sucked it up, but I just came from a game where someone in our group had one. I kinda felt left out -- like hey the Top laner who probably likes playing that lane has a Sona emote. That sucks that I, a Sup main, can't ever get her favourite champion's emote. Just...feels bad...

It's super frustrating!! This benefits a select few people at the cost of the vast majority. Even the content creators get screwed over because people spam them for emotes everywhere.

Welcome to the issue MonkeyKing mains had this year with HIS emote. Just be happy you at least have a base skin emote, we don't even have that. Either we got the bundle from the Lunar Revel event or we get nothing...

Then Sona fans should get special treatment, obviously I know you think the best way is to make a general exclusive emote. Then you end up with someone liking the exclusive general emote and not wanting it exclusive, what you're basically against is making stuff exclusive and all i have to say is, tough luck and tbh I wanted it myself but oh well. Exclusive stuff has been in gaming since ages and whether it be for a specific character or a general one, someone will end up wanting it and wishing it wasn't exclusive, that's what makes it exclusive that you got something others want.
