How do Nexus' contribute to modern day life in Runeterra?

I was led to understand that under the new Lore style, the League of Legends doesn't exist. In that version, I would think that the Nexus's are not critical to the lore, and possibly don't even exist.

So how does the institute of war fit into all of this if the league doesn't actually exist?

It doesn't. The Institute of War no longer exists, methinks. You can poke around in the old news articles for more info if you're curious; they released a story explaining the decision around the time of the Shurima update.

I do believe that the nexuses exist even after the "lore changes", they are an important source of magical energy... and we can see a nexus on the video of a new dawn (And the map of Kalamanda still canon, same with the Howling Abyss and the uglytreeline.

Remember that the nexus will be visual updated in the new map, and they removed the sumoners statues. So the magical crystals of energy are part of Valoran.
