Gatekeeper Galio Interaction with Ashe - Loretime

Soooo, I've watched this video and noticed the Interaction of Gatekeeper Galio with Ashe. > "Let your Mom die, huh?! Circle 9!"

This made me question a few things I knew about Ashes Lore and I looked again at the official Rito lore (I think Ashe's one has never changed even once) : > "When Ashe was only fifteen, her mother was killed while commanding the tribe on a brash raid. Suddenly thrust into the role of leader, Ashe made the difficult decision to follow her childhood vision instead of seeking the revenge she craved."

Let's for now go on to Circle 9. Some of you will know, some of you wont, but this is the representation of hell in the first part, named "Inferno" of the "Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri (14th Century). So, ye, some really ancient stuff. In this book, hell is represented in 9 Circles + the center of hell, the higher the number gets, the nearer you get to the center and the harder is your punishment. Circle 9 is the last circle before getting into the center (big news) and stands for Treachery. This could make sense even without the accusation of murder (like, she did not try to get her revenge). Little sidenote: circle nine is a goddamn frozen lake, an icy region, like Freljord (the sinners are mostly partially trapped in the ice).

BUT we still have Ashe accused of Murder of her mother, which lead me to four Theories:

  1. Ashe killed her Mother by her own Hand. Does no seem very likely, she does not seem the one that would kill her own mother to get what she wants.
  2. Ashe killed her Mother by not helping her either willingly or unwillingly when she got killed during that raid. Makes more sense. At least that's what I think.
  3. Rito did not think much about it and somebody fucked something up (which can happen)
  4. Rito maybe plans on updating Ashe/Freljord Lore sometimes soon, maybe even some gameplay elements and this is a teaser

Interesting. "Let your mother die" is not matricide. It would be extremely contrary to Ashe's character for her to flat-out kill her mother, or even to cause her death in a less direct way. Even if Ashe's mother was evil (for some reason), Ashe would seek a peaceful solution. So I think it's more likely Ashe tried to save her mother, but failed. Circle nine seems pretty harsh for an accident, though.

Darn it, now I'm hyped for some proper Freljord lore.

I would say Riot approached this as Ashe would feel like she belongs in Circle 9 because she would blame herself for her mothers death. Which is why Gatekeeper taunts her like that when in reality Ashe probably wasn't at fault. IDK blaming oneself for the death of a loved one is an issue commonly found in character arcs. I could totally see Avarosa's death playing out like that iconic Lion King scene from Ashe's perspective.

But current lore doesn't exactly confirm that Ashe was present to her mothers death. In fact the Freljord lore has a few holes in it.

What is Lissandra transformed into a visage of Ashe and killed her mother (as well as convinced Sej to kill her own, which prob wont take much) and then that lead everyone to believe that Ashe was the cold hard killer even though she didnt want it.

Ashe cant really seek out revenge on the killer because:

  1. she doesnt exactly know who it was
  2. Freljordians probably think Ashe is a badass for killing her mother (a barbarian lot they are), so there isnt much pressure to seek revenge

They might have chosen circle 9,simply because it is ice related.

Or maybe Ashe chose to not help her mother on this raid and that caused her mothers death?I mean what if her mother wanted to attack a group of people that ashe saw as innocent?It would make sense that Ashe wouldn't want to participate in such a raid.

It's much more likely that, as you said, Gatekeeper Galio sees Ashe as having inadvertently "killed" her mother by not aiding her in the raid or sees Ashe choosing not to seek revenge as an act of treachery. Also, as someone who's never been super familiar with Dante's Inferno, learning that Treachery's circle is frozen over like the Freljord is pretty interesting, and is probably why the writers chose to include this particular line. Hell is all about ironic punishments (most of which rhyme), after all.

Also to keep in mind is the fact that Gatekeeper Galio seems to see every person as damned, regardless of how small their perceived sin is. (With lines like "Heaven? Hehehe, nobody goes there...")

Sejuani was stated to commit matricide so maybe it'll be a recurring theme in the updates.

I believe the Freljord is going to get updated maybe late this year or early next year...this may be a set up of sorts? What if on whatever exploration/hunt they come across a watcher ruin. Inside they find a but of true-ice weapons including what would be Ashe's bow. Ashe's mother gets possessed by a watcher or one of their minion guard things and Ashe had to kill her and escape.
