Whaqt happened to visual updates?

TL;DR Why did Riot stop doing VUs even though they are really necessary?

Back in the day in season 4 many champs got really nice visual updates Garen Nasus Alistar since they didn't really need a gamplay update. Since the beginning of season 5 though, nearly no champs got a VU without getting a gamplay update aswell. Ofcourse I understand that many old champs need the gamplay update Urgot Galio but at the moment we only get about 4 of those each year. At this rate I think League will never actually be uptodate ever again. VUs are just so much easier to make then the whole rework so we could actually have like 10 VUs each season. Through this League could atleast get all there champs visually quite fast.

Champs that I think need a VU: Blitzcrank Chogath DrMundo Evelynn Galio Gragas Jax Katarina Kennen Malphite Mordekaiser Morgana Nunu Rammus Swain Urgot Veigar Warwick Yorick And actually those are just the ones that need a VU the most. There are many more champions which are far from the new champs

Not worth putting people on that. Half of those you listed are queued for a VGU.

They're less inclined to do visual updates without any gameplay changes now. It's a more efficient use of resources to prioritize champions that need both visual and gameplay updates.

Visual Updates require:

  • new base model
  • and alterations/additions to that for all skins
  • new animation rig (most of the time)
  • new textures
  • new idle, movement, and recall animations
  • new animations and particles for all skills
  • new art assets
  • spell icons, splash art (loading screen slice and portrait too)
  • recording new voiceovers, then hooking them up in-game (often, but certainly not every time)
  • testing of all assets and interactions to be sure they got hooked up correctly and didn't break things

Visual and Gameplay Updates require all of those, plus:

  • new spell concepts
  • implementation of new spell mechanics
  • balance work
  • MORE testing to try and catch all of the bugs introduced by new mechanics

I may have (read as: "almost certainly") missed a few things, but I hope this helps clarify the magnitude of the undertaking to update an entire champion.

Have you been snorting bleach? Ryze's relaunch literally just came out this patch. We also had Shen and Poppy's VU late last year and earlier this year.

The reason is that it is much more efficient to do VUs together with GUs.

That way they can both add to each other and can be done much more efficiently.

Also pretty much every champ that needs a VU also needs a GU,so there is little point in doing them seperatedly.

Also you really think Kata needs a VU?She already had one which isn't that old.

And we'll get Yorick update this year and even Warwick if we are lucky(he'll come out either at the end of this year,or at the beginning of the next)
