This is a fairly straight-forward question, I think. We know that the Darkin are trapped in their own weapons and have to rely on mortal hosts, but does that explicitly mean that the host has to be human? Could a vastayan be possessed by a Darkin if they touched the weapon? What about the Ascended? What about Yordles? Do other races aside from humans have some kind of immunity?
Just a thought that's been on my mind lately.
The old theory was that, since old-aatrox was winged (and the only winged creatures we have are either anivia or the angels) that Aatrox was a darkin-possessed angel.

I mean, for starters they have to be able to hold the weapon so this rules out Void Spawn by default. I wouldn't be too surprised if Aatrox saw Jax as the ideal vessel.
I think they can, but i think they need a suitable host that can hold on to their weapon
