Why Sylas trailer ruins Lux's lore

So before I go too into this, I think its important to establish why I am nitpicking this so much. Sometime last year, Riot completely changed and revamped Lux's lore from an underground spell casting badass fighting for Demacia, to using her powers in secret and talking with statues. Lux has been and will always be my favorite champion but this just seems sloppy.

Lux Lore's role: It's important to know why this breaks Lux lore by first establishing what this actually breaks. As of now, Lux has secret magical powers that is known only to an underground group known as the illumination, and the statue that is Galio. In Lux's short story, Galio senses the power from inside Lux, but galio for the most part is just that, a statue. He is empowered to move by the magic stored in Lux. Essentially, her magic is a secret to Demacia. The only people that should know is the illuminators.

Iluminator's role: This is a little more ambiguous, but we can assume a few things based on the lore as it stands.

Lux is a member of the illuminators
Magic is frowned upon by the city of Demacia
The Illuminators MUST be acting as a covert underground secret magic group.

The video; Setting: We have to go based on the surroundings of this room that Sylas is in. From previous mention from various Riot employees, this champion is (or was going to be) Demacian. This is supported by the striking similarity from the room we are placed in. The architecture of the building is extremely similar, and the viewpoint outside of the lone portal to this room, seems to be of Demacian origin. We can see a good glimpse of the outside at 1:31. Also, we can assume very easily that this is some sort of Demacian prison, and again this makes sense. The chains are a Demacian gold, similar to that of Lux and Garen's armor. In addition we see what appears to be a date logging of how long Sylas was chained here. Finally we can guess why Sylas is actually locked up here and why this may play a role in why Lux is visiting. The pulses of magic coming from Sylas could mean he was locked up here for being magic in Demacia. It would damn well make sense if Lux was going to this prison to see the only other magical being mentioned (besides galio).

The broken lore: Lux is only seen for a few moments beginning at time 1:30, but in that time it shreds the lore of her character. From our various assumptions (which are very easy assumptions) Lux is walking into a prison. Now I've never actually been to a prison, but usually they are government operated with guards and things to help continue enforcing the law (in this case the sentence).

Why the hell is Lux walking into a Demacian prison with her magical staff? This would out her in a second! So either one of a few things has to happen since she is openly carrying magic in a Demacian prison.

This prison is under control of an underground covert group called the "Illuminators" (unlikely).
Lux literally doesn't give a F*** about her magic and will openly display it now, contrary to her lore (which honestly would make Lux badass again).
An oversight of Riot and confusion with previous lore (possible).
Her staff isn't magical. (extremely unlikely seeing as it literally glows with magic)

Maybe i'm looking way too into this, but something doesn't seem right. 7+ years of Lux and I feel something is wrong.

Curious to hear any others opinions.

TL;DR: Lux shouldn't be open with her magic in a Demacian prison if magic is so taboo and can get her locked up herself.

The trailer can be pretty safely assumed to be embellished, to an extent. Have you read Sylas's bio, by chance?

I have! And im happy to see a lot of assumptions I made here in fact correct! Previously I had only read the short description on his abilities page.

The trailer isnt canon, i got it confirmed by a Rioter, but in her bio I think she is discreet and smart enough to not directly let Sylas touch her for fear of him breaking out since she knows he’s in jail for a reason

It couldn't be something as simple as Lux broke into the prison, using her magic to do so (hence her staff)???

A simple reason could be, In order to free other magical beings and pull them into her organization.

However Sylas, being the angry revolutionist he is, didn't agree with her views and just stole her abilities and broke out. (That explains why in one of the teasers shes chained while he is destroying parts of Demacia.

I encourage you to read Sylas' bio as this is not the case. Lux did not attempt to free him at any point, but frequently visited and traded stories of the outside world to lessons on controlling her magic. He did sap some of the energy from lux to escape, but steal is a bit of an inaccurate term. They are actually friends

I think you have a small point but have projected it in the wrong direction and making a pretty misconstrued accusation.

I would agree that Lux's presence during Sylas' destructive escape should put her under some heavy amounts of suspicion by the authorities and the repercussions should be her struggling to explain how what happened may have happened.

Although I dont think anyone knew Sylas could absorb and redistribute other's magic, so they won't necessarily know the powerful blast came from her, into sylas. But over time given that Sylas infamy will grow, demacians should eventually come to realize he can absorb the magic of other sorcerors and look back on who was the only survivor during his escape.

I think you misunderstood my point as this is not at all what I am saying. My argument is not regarding whether or not Lux can be discovered via the transfer of power to Sylas. My argument here is that by Lux walking in with her magical staff, into what appears to be a maximum security Demacian prison, it kind of makes the lore of her keeping her powers secret a bunch of BS. In order for her to bring her clearly magical staff anywhere near Sylas in the scene, she would have to presumably walk past tons of people, guards, Demacians, and none of them looked at her and said, "wow look at her magical staff, totally not magic though, youre clear to visit!"

My thought process did not even take into account the transfer of power to Sylas, but merely dissecting the video trailer in depth.

And others did point out the video is not hard canon. From the story, one would read between the lines that she didn't waltz into The Great City flaunting a mage's tool. So she hasn't blown her cover yet.

(I'm commenting from my phone so I apologize in advance for lack of layout, spelling and organizational stuffs)

So, a few things I do wanna point out is that they never specify in Sylas' bio about the perameters of the Mageseeker prison. However, we also can learn a lot regarding what might go on in state-run prisons through inference from Sylas' short story and bio.

1- We know Demacia's government is corrupt. The fact that Sylas could get a job working for the gov despite being a mage himself is an example. Lux also proves it.

2- Sylas is an exception in government hiring of mages. Sylas' short story states that high-ranking Demacians who wielded magic could avoid being taken by mageseekers.

3- Lux keeps her magic a secret from even her family- save her mother. We know she's ashamed of her magic to some extent, and could easily assume she doesn't much like Demacia's treatment of mages.

4- The lightseekers work for the government of Demacia. It's possible they may have a 'fight fire with fire' mentality in prisons.

Tldr;

The people in the prison probably already know she's also a mage. The fact she's a crownguard only aids to the fact that she's free- she's got the name of the captain of the royal gaurd. A VERY high rank. She works for the lightseekers, making her recognized by the government as an underground mage, and giving her clearance to some stuff relating to magic that we know even Garen knows nothing about.

EDIT(s): The organization Lux works for is the Illuminators. (Just checked to make sure I was sound there). Also, it even says that Lux volunteers as an Illuminator to guard his cell in Sylas's Bio, confirming 4.

Also, I think 2 is may be better stated in the bio but I really don't want to go back and compare so yeh. One of the two.

I think you’re nitpicking too much...

It’s obvious Riot wanted to make a big impact on players with the champion reveal so they gave magical undertones to the trailer by including Lux and her staff. It would indeed make no sense for Lux to walk in a Demacian prison with her staff but I don’t think Riot really cares.

LoL is a MOBA before it is a story so if it looks good to the public that doesn’t know any of the lore, they’ll include it.
