So. I was just reading Swain's lore. He is my main mid so i just wanted to reread it. And then I asked myself, how is it that Swain is a mage? I mean, they never mention anything of it in his lore.

GreenLore3 votesWe simply don't know. Swains background is a complete mystery and so are the origins of his abilities.
However it is possible that Beatrice is the origin of swains powers,as she doesn't look like a normal raven. There is also the fact that sion was warned to "not trust ravens",so it is possible that swain or at least beatrice was already alive around the time when Jarvan I died.

as we know is just a dead corpse possessed by the Raven. Would explain why he didn't want magic healing on his leg when he first appeared at a noxian clinic as a youth. Magic could have detected the possession.
I'm not sure how much of and Beatrice are the same or separate. Beatrice would be a demon that made a deal with, which is possible. Beatrice is old however, old enough for a warning to 
.
The bigger question I have, is who warned and when?
Anchatat1 votesI like your way of thinking, but I dont really think it is so. Probable Swain was a kid when Noxus invades his home and he somehow broke his leg, or anything like that, i dont really know. Anyways, i dont think Beatrice would be so loyal if Swain was only her puppet. I mean, she could get a better body than old Swain's. Beatrice might be the origin or booster of his powers, but I dont think she commands him. :-). Buuut. On the other hand, its really weird that swain's hair looks like a raven (i know it sounds too damn stupid, but there could be a relationship between one thing and the other, por is it just obsession, just as fiddle's case?). I dont really know. Lets just hope Riot fleshes him out.
Ralanr3 votesBegs to question why she would need a better body. Beatrice wouldn't want to risk the dangers of frontline combat, so a weak body that works as a tactician would be safer and have access to more political power.
Plus she acts the loyal pet because that's what she wants people to think. Who would suspect a bird?
The Raven is important. I think it's the true puppeteer. Possibly the founder of the black rose (it has connections most likely as Swain is connected to the black rose).

Magic is, while maybe not common exactly, openly used and widely practiced. He doesn't need a REASON to be a mage, he just has to have some degree of natural talent, learning, or combination thereof.
As for the Raven...puppet-master theories have been around for a while and are a definite possibility I personally prefer the idea that Beatrice is some manner of demon that Swain has made a pact with, more of a partnership than outright posession
