It goes against the status quo and how things are in real life.
He's the underdog, somewhat quirky, means well and acts awkwardly around the girl he likes to the point where it's obvious, but he probably doesn't say things outright, so she lets it be. Let the asshole who is like "Sup. Like my shrooms," come in and take her away.
