Summoner's role in current lore?

So i was honestly never really that familiar with the lore of league summoners to begin with, but about 2 years ago when i started, i asked my friend and he basically said that "we are the summoners, when in game we share a mindlink type situation with the champions we control and we duke it. "

Never really asked about it again after that, until i started hearing peeps talk about how that isnt really canon anymore, or that its changed. Can someone please clear up where the role of the summoner's, the institute of war, and all that now plays in the game's lore? I think The Institute of War and the Summoners were completely erased from the lore. They simply don't exist in the current lore.

The retcon removed all of the summoners and such, champions that relied heavily on them in lore are in the process of being retconned

The Institute of War, and its Summoners used to be a sort of wizard-UN in-universe. When the lore got reworked, those elements were both removed from the universe.

We are still the summoners, controlling champions from Runeterra for our mysterious purposes, but we are no longer canonically in the same world as the characters.
