Can we talk about the "Enemies are Missing" pings?

Okay, so I'm going to preface this by saying, I know this has been said before, and I know you can just mute pings.

BUT I've got to say, people abusing this ping to harass teammates for making a single mistake is one of my biggest pet peeves since I came back to league a couple of months ago. I took a year and a half off. I left due to toxicity, and it seems like the game has improved in that regard, but honestly the pings getting used in that way really drives me insane.

Honestly, It's akin to someone typing "you're an indiot" in chat, and it tilts people. Especially if it's the first 3 minutes of the game, and you do one tiny thing wrong and get blasted with question marks. That's uncalled for, and I feel like it's toxic behavior. But I'm not sure if people actually get punished for abusing it. I report everyone that does, but I haven't gotten one of those "a player your reported got punished." messages in a long time.

I'm wondering if changing the symbol for that ping to make it not a question mark would be better. I know people are going to abuse whatever they have to be jerks, it's just human nature. But let's make it harder for those people.

if you're doing something thats questionable/leads to setting your team behind or looks like you will set your team behind, people question ping. riot says you cant get banned for question pinging.

besides, if 4 people clearly show that they dont like what you're doing/too risky then maybe take it as advice :)

I get that. And it was me being an idiot some of the time. It's not the question pinging specifically that bothers me, it's spamming it to harass teammates that really frustrates me. Like... you don't need to ping 5 times. I know I was stupid. And half the time, I can't tell if teammates are actually pinging MIA, or just being a jerk, and that's also frustrating and confusing. It could also be my elo too where people just tend to abuse it more. I don't know.

False. "constructive" can be interpreted in many ways, some being negative. Thus all forms of criticism are reportable. Don't believe me? Go try. Be as polite and "constructive" as you can towards struggling players playing poorly. 8/10 times they will resent and report you regardless, and 8/10 is enough to create a pattern leading to a ban. Yes, you WILL get banned for trying to be helpful to other people over enough instances.

Played since beta, received all possible honor ribbons, summoner icons, sportsmanlike player rewards, etc. Climbed from honor 2 to honor 5 in s7 in a few months. Never been banned before s8, but now in s8 stuck at dishonorable despite being about 50 times (not even an exaggeration) less toxic than I was in previous years simply due to the community now comprising of coddled children and RIOT willing to enable them. Veteran players are leaving the game in droves for things like Fortnite because we can all see how much WORSE the community is now days compared to previous seasons, and RIOT does not care at all. Protecting new players from the somehow unbearable harshness of the truth is all they care about now.

No, it's not. Even disregarding the fact that this 8/10-number is completely made up, you could be reported in every single game you've ever played, it doesn't matter. If your chat doesn't show any negativity you won't get banned.

Besides: Whether constructive criticism is accepted or not, unconstructive criticism is still 100% pointless and only serves to aggravate the person receiving it, which will likely make them play even worse.

Anything and everything is reportable. What is punishable is pretty narrowly defined.

Yeah right. Constructive criticism would lead to a punishment faster than anything. It doesn't even matter if you're trying to help, the chimp will rage and report you.

Easier to stick to ping spam.

I've seen it used on me for missing 1 skill shot so yea you have no idea what you are talking about. If people think you are doing something risky they ping caution. In any case the first time i see someone do it i almost immediately mute their pings.

its a pretty idiotic thing to do. like what is the purpose of ? spamming a teammate when they make a mistake? best case they mute your pings worst case you tilt them into feeding.

but I don't see what can be done about it. you could change the ? ping into a smiley face and people are still going to be toxic with it

Ping spam as a harassment tool is a punishable offense though...

I've seen a case of punishment on this boards 2 years ago.. or sometime around there.

If you don't want ping spam then make less mistakes and pay more attention. Honestly, NA has by far the least toxic server in all of League and all Riot has done is lower people's tolerance towards toxicity. The result being that people in NA "experience" high levels of toxicity despite the fact that NA, as I said, is the least toxic server.

Yesterday's Beyond the Rift episode with Cowsep proved this beyond 100% The NA server is so anal about what you can say and how you can express tilt that its forced people into very passive aggressive behavior like spam ping.

Letting people get away with saying more in chat would be the only way to get rid of passive aggressiveness. Because at the end of the day League is a very frustrating game. Very fun, but very frustrating. And people that like to win (which I know doesn't include most of the people on the Player Behavior boards but does include most players) are going to need an outlet for that frustration.

i love being 8/1 and being pinged by the 3/7. I mean whos the ones making more mistakes in that instant. I do not like ive ever been ping spammed by anyone who wasn't feeding. Spamming people with pings actually makes it harder for them to concentrate and actually increases their own chances of messing up. Your ping spam is only hurting not helping.

Are you saying that Ping spamming to harass is a better option, Its better if they did they didn't do anything at all or, are you trying to push some type of agenda with posting here.

Hmm, I can see how this would bother you and I'm sorry.

I usually just find humor in it and I ping myself. I am one to laugh at my stupid and embarrassing mistakes (like a flash fail over the wall).

I know it's not this easy, and every situation is different, but in some cases perhaps try to see the humor in it? Like as a meme instead of an insult (not to say that memes are never insults).

Now of course, there are times when it's just downright tilting. Especially when it comes from someone who is flaming you in chat. That gets to me, too.

Yeah, that's pretty much how this one particular instance happened. Made one mistake early on in game. Didn't cost us anything except we took some damage in a trade, and he flamed me in chat and spammed question mark pings on me for the next couple of minutes. Then I muted him and his pings, but by that point, I was already pissed.

I think everyone takes this ping waaaaaa-y to seriously. I think its funny and (often) light hearted. Hell I use it on myself when I misplay.

If its literally being spammed to max amount? Sure different story, but 2-3 to joust at someone a little bit is fun, even when its on me.

It's irritating AF because it makes the audio cue useless. Each ping has a specific meaning and different SFX, but you can't rely on "enemy missing" to actually mean "enemy missing" because it's used as a harassment tool more than its used to actually say "the enemy laner is MIA".
