Could I have done something better?

Last game I had a teammate most likely report me for hate speech. In the pre game lobby I looked at everyone's declared champs and said to be careful not to select too much ad. One summoner told me to "pick the gay champ" since I was support. I went with Leona and then told him "that's a pretty ignorant way to refer to someone like that" He then told me that he was gay and that I was making it sound bad to be gay, which clearly was not my intention. Once the game started I told him it was unfair that he had twisted my meaning and that I was gonna mute him so no further altercation could disrupt our team, I also told him good luck and to have fun that game. In the post game lobby he continued to flame me and asked others to report me. I just wanna know if I could have done anything better in this situation to avoid being reported. I'm about to just not talk at all in this game.
