Why would you play on phone wifi?

Had 4 DC's in a row today on my team on aram. Just wanted the FWTD bonus tbh, so I started playing league today. The first 2 games, we had players that admitted to playing on their phone's wifi connection and immediately complained about lag before disconnecting. Why would you do this, as a player? I have never wanted to play SO BAD that I would play on my phone's wifi, so why risk the report and shitty game for your team? I just don't understand at all. please enlighten me if you've ever thought this to be a good idea.

I mean there are people that the only internet connection they get even at home is 4G LTE. Theoretically, that connection is virtually indistinguishable from connections available in somewhat rural parts of the US as well as some suburban parts.

Virtually the only difference noticeable between that and a high end fiber connection would be slightly higher ping and noticeable packet loss causing some sporadic light lag.

If they didn't have a high end mobile connection, I agree it was rude of them to attempt playing.

Why? Because the OP reeks of ignorance and righteous malice. There are many places where phone wifi is 100% reliable, while a wiredwifi or wired connection is less so. Most of Canada is this way.

The only reason I don't agree with this is there are also tons of places with good enough free wifi to play reliably, But I had not thought about it being like that in canada. I just know there are plenty of places in the US that have free wifi in a lot of cities. At least it was ARAM and not a ranked match! Its just makes the game suck for everyone if you're playing on a connection with essentially a guarantee of DC or constant lag, including that person and their teammates.

I used to be in mobile/cell phone sales. I live in a city with almost 3 million people in the USA. However a HUGE chunk of my sales were for customers who outside of the major urban area, in places where the only internet available is satellite (which is ridiculously overpriced, unreliable, and slow) or mobile 4G LTE hotspots/phone connections. "Plenty of places in the US that have free wifi in a lot of cities" aren't an option for a very large number of people. There is more rural land than there is urban.

While I would have been less insulting, I have to agree with GreatWhiteNorth. Online gaming isn't just for those privileged or lucky enough to have the best internet connections. You were playing a casual aram. You weren't playing ranked promos for challenger. I think you can excuse and forgive someone for having internet problems.

My point was that the phone is better than a wired connection in Canada, because nobody uses their phones for internet here. Most people in fact do have access to dsl in Canada because the provincial governments still controlled the telecoms when the internet showed up, and were willing to build infrastructure at a loss.

People pay a lot more for mobile in Canada - than anywhere on earth. For it they get 100% reliable internet on mobile, but it is too expensive to use. Which makes it more reliable.

I simply read a bunch of insults in op's post and decided to not bother explaining how the world works outside of his town/city to him.

Thanks for the insight this really helped! Instead of criticize you actually gave some background into what it is like. I have played only bots on my phone connection before and that was even unplayable so I was probably thinking of this issue purely from my own experience with phone wifi. This helped put it into perspective rather than being outright insulting like the other comment (which is what is wrong with this community, just blatant toxicity for no reason). Thanks again!

If you don't have a connection befitting to play an online game, then don't play an online game, I don't get why people do that.

play against easy bots. it doesn't give as much for the actual win, but you don't spend 2 hours trying to get it.

League is addicting. Lonely, bored, obsessive personalities, etc could easily want to play bad enough to try out a poor internet connection. If I were unsure of my internet, I would probably test it out in an aram as well since they are taken less serious than summoners rift. Also, I play on my phone's wifi all the time and 90% of my games have no lag. Just like any internet service, phone wifi can have problems too. It's not about ruining the game for other people, it's about wanting to enjoy the game, too.

I use 4G LTE from my tethered to my computer from my phone, it works just fine. My phone's data in completely unlimited, so there's not a risk of it slowing down from "running out of data". At times it gets up to 15 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload and it normally runs on average around 5 Mbps download and upload. 99% of the time, it runs anything just fine. League of Legends isn't exactly a high bandwidth game, in fact it uses less data than streaming in 720p. There are definitely times where I lag and disconnect, but that's a rare thing which doesn't happen often. I'm pretty sure the same thing can happen on even a cable connection, so should I worry about it? To me, my connection is reliable enough that having some issues once every 30 games shouldn't be a problem.

That is definitely good to hear, the thing that had me going at the time of the post was that they admitted to DC's and terrible lag all day, but as I said at least it wasn't a ranked game or something. I have unlimited too as of very recently so after your comment I might try it on my phone's connection on a bots game and see if it is alright! Thanks for the input!

I just find it odd that in a major metropolitan area, I can't get that from my phone! Thats why I was confused honestly, I couldnt see that possibly being a strong/responsive enough connection to play such a game. But as I mentioned earlier at least it was aram and not ranked or something. Thanks for the input everyone! I will try to be more understanding for sure. Guess i was just salty for DC's causing so many losses haha.

Here's a screen of my current connection, using my phone hooked to a USB on my computer. That's no joke of a connection, I could stream to Twitch.tv with that upload speed. Granted, the download isn't as good as the best you can get from cable but it's really not that bad either. lol
