Clearing the air with Riot Games

Hello all summoners. First and foremost, I would like to state that League of Legends is a very fun, interesting, and all around amazing game.

That being said, I'm forever done playing league, and here is why: Riot games has banned my 2 league accounts, within about 2 months of each other. The first of which was my main account, which i spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on throughout 3 years of playing the game. Yes, i was becoming more and more toxic and probably not watching my language enough (Though, i never used racial slurs, or other derogatory terms against gay people or mentally challenged..) so I understand why riot would have banned my account.

My second account, aka smurf, was just banned a few days ago. I have muted all games i Played on it ever since my main was banned over a month ago. Approximately 2 weeks ago it was put on a suspension, and now, today, i find it was banned. below I have posted the Chat that I was supposedly banned for.

To Riot, I completely understand banning peoples accounts if they are bad for the community. But to be completely honest, the last few months of playing your game, I never had very many games where people didn't blow up on each other (even if it wasn't me) and become very toxic, which includes slurs that I NEVER used on either account.

But, one thing riot never did when I received my "14 game suspension" or "permanent ban" pop ups when logging in, was tell me what about my chat got me banned, and why they view some things as badly as the way they do.

I'm glad all of the games I played where I received no reports (which is many more than games that did) meant probably nothing before I was suspended or banned. I also would like to inform you that your community is probably among some of the worst I have ever been apart of. Yes, many players are great to play games with, but so many just ruin so many of them, and apparently I'm a part of that problem.

Any ways, I hope your company can find a solution to these problems better than simply banning people for a bad game or two of Chats. Maybe if players are getting in trouble for chat, give them a permanent chat ban instead of completely destroying their account and all of the time they have spent earning things in your game. I really don't appreciate how you treated the 3 years prior to my bans as though they did not exist. I really do love the game, and sad that I won't ever play it again. Hope other people can see just how messed up this "reformation" system is that you guys are seemingly so proud of.

Im Very interested to see what other people think of how riot handles situations when it comes to banning players from this game.

Punishments escalate through 4 tiers;

  • 10 game chat restriction
  • 25 game chat restriction
  • 14 day account ban
  • Permanent account ban

In these games you were certainly exhibiting negative behavior such as lobbying to mass report players, or unsportsmanlike conduct like repeatedly saying "gg ez" and insulting your teammates. If you already had a 14 day ban, then a permanent ban was up next and was appropriate.

The point of these escalating punishments is to reform players. If one refuses to do so, then the punishments will just get worse to the point of losing their accounts. When this happens, Riot is already saying they don't want the player. They are free to create a new account, but if their behavior does not change they will likely be met with the same results.

Yeah, I understand these tiers of punishment reform, but if the issue is coming from the chat logs, why not simply PERMANENTLY ban the players ability to chat? By simply banning the account all together, you completely erase all of the hard work, not to mention all of the money, that is put into making the game enjoyable for that particular person. So instead of keeping someone who loves the game, but gets baited into saying some things they regret, they competently eliminate that person from enjoying the game.

DOUBLE EDIT: Forgot to mention, I never received any other restrictions, just the 14 - day restriction ban, then the complete ban. Still not sure on why the above chat was enough TO COMPLETELY BAN the account... I do understand how the tiers work though.

They used to do infinitely stacking chat restrictions (they are against absolute chat removal), but if a chat restriction doesn't stop a player they'll just keep doing it. The only option is to escalate the punishment to something they actually care about. If a temp ban still doesn't have an effect, there are not many other options; losing all that hard work you mentioned should be a pretty strong motivator to shape up, imo.

I'm still pretty frustrated with the fact that 3 years of being a model player is completely destroyed by a few instances, in comparison, of bad chat behavior which is clearly instigated by other players in a match of league of legends. Riot has previously stated that they understand everyone has bad days.

Also, why is riot against a permanent chat ban? it solves the only issue a player is apparently continuously having, and would allow that player to continue playing the game without breaking any more of riots rules. If they simply block that one thing, then players who eventually get tired of listening to the same toxic chat can still continue playing without hurting themselves by responding to them.

Yes everyone has bad days, but that doesn't mean that you can continuously just pass off consistently and constant negative behavior as "just some bad or off days". You should know by now that in order to even get punished you have to consistently show a trend of negative behavior across multiple games. Also, it doesn't matter what someone else does as you are responsible for your own behavior and your own behavior alone. From Understanding the Tribunal:

4) That player in my game was far worse than me. Why am I banned??? a) I'll keep this one simple: retaliation isn't OK. Reacting to a toxic player by being toxic just incites that player to be even worse--it also ruins the game for up to 8 other players. It is far, far worse to watch two people yelling at each other all game than it is to watch 1 player ranting into blank space. Almost everyone in the game can find someone out there that behaves worse than they do--but so what? Finding someone worse doesn't justify your behavior or justify retaliation. We expect more out of our players. What players often don't realize is... those other players in your game that you thought were worse? Nearly 100% of the time, those players were banned even before you were. If someone is being toxic, just report them and move on. If you retaliate, both of you will be banned. It's really that simple.

In your two games you were constantly negative and at some points (especially in game 2) seem to be intentionally trying to get someone to act up just so that you could have an excuse to valid report them.

It is also known that truly egregious cases are immediately escalated to a 2-week or a permanent ban depending on the severity of the case in hand. This is also true for known offenders who continue to act up on their smurf accounts as well (i.e. smurfs of banned accounts can have their statuses immediately escalated to 2-week or permanent ban if they continue the behaviors that got their first accounts banned in the first place). If what you say is true then I assume that this is what happened to you.

DTN already explained this but basically while it may work for some it doesn't work for all. There are many players out there who only care about trolling and being jerks and so to them a chat restriction or a permanent chat ban is meaningless as they will just continue to troll and be a jerk via gameplay until they're finally removed from the game completely. That is why it doesn't work, as it's not the be all-end all solution to the problems at hand regarding behaviors.

In my eyes, those that get rightfully permabanned are the lowest dirt of humanity. Twice as well, so .. you are the manure inside the dirt I guess?

I really don't have too much tolerance towards them.

If you are working towards reform, its a separate issue, but for now, stay as dirt.

no they arent. social justice warriors stand up for all people from all walks of life. riot doesnt even want you talking about specific things, because they would rather avoid conflict than help people resolve their differences in a peaceful manner. they dont do anything and usually let the worse part of the community take the role of juror, and make their decision based off the community. and thats why riot is not social justice warriors. most people are bigots, and narrow minded. no culture or diversity.

Its not the worst I've seen from other players on a daily basis, but it seems like in the first game you probably got multiple reports for negative behavior. It adds up when your whole team is against you even if youre not wrong.

Beside that, saying "gg ez" and "ez" gets you in deep shit from what I understand. Sorry to hear about your ban, but I think you'll find nicer games with nicer communities now.

Yeah, your the first person to tell me saying GG ez or EZ would get me in trouble with being reported. Most of my buddies do it all the time, and I can see how it might be a little rude, but for the most part its just kind of a joke. Thanks for the comment. I have found that the birth of Overwatch has created a very nice community to be a part of, and I suggest it if you haven't tried it already.

You whine almost constantly, multiple gg ez just to show disrespect. Definitely unsportsmanlike. Just sucks it ended up being a permanent ban instead of a minor chat restriction, however your past actions dictate what the punishment is.

Why not permanent mute chat? Toxic chat frequently goes hand in hand with toxic gameplay, and when people found they couldn't flame they would often turn to feeding and trolling to "get back" at teammates. Toxic people tend to be toxic in multiple ways so it's best to just get rid of them entirely.
