My Experience with the In-Game Chat Restriction
As in the title I will share how my in-game chat restriction has affected me in way I did not think it could be useful for. I will start off by giving you some clarity as to why I was chat banned. I was flaming at in one game where my support (Duo) had gone to the restroom and was also caught up by someone striking a conversation in her household. Our teammates were not so humble about the situation and I fired back in a knee-jerk 4 a.m. reaction. The other game the tribunal looked at was me saying fuck a couple time -_-. Anyway, to the topic at hand! In my first game with the restriction I informed my team about it and explained I would solely be using pings or gj's when I could. As the game progressed I found that my lane was losing (Playing adc) and I was also being not-so-kindly notified of it. Using one chat at a time over the course of about 16 minutes I would rebuttal, and in doing so, un-knowingly take my mind out of the game. We ended up losing that game but I feel that was more of a teamwork sort of thing. In the next few games it turned out like this a more than not because I was too focused on the chat restriction and not being able to defend myself. Then finally, with only a couple games left of my chat restriction I started to understand how it could be used effectively as both a learning tool, and also as a hammer to the consistent flamers. Instead of being worried about defending myself I started thinking about just letting go what my mid laner said to me (which was to be blunt, lots of caps and emotional distress) and focusing on having a healthy attitude towards her and my fellow teammates while focusing on the game at hand. SO I did this for my last 3 games and it worked perfectly. I can keep attention to my lane and current situation of other lanes while also cs'ing, poking, and backing off successfully without a hitch. How did I get to that just by not having a constant rebuttal ready for the aggressively competitive teammates we all have? It's simple. I didn't say a single thing besides good job, and that was rare as well. I just didn't type really the whole game. In league of legends you might feel like it's a communication game as well as beating out your opponents but that doesn't mean you have to be vocal about anything. Pinging is still as effective as ever and you don't have to stop movement(or continue moving and risk ultimately inting) to notify them of what you think is the right move. There's no need to type in a game that is in constant motion and it just distracts you from your end goal, winning.
Well I feel like I rambled a bit there but I hope you didn't lose sight of what I was trying to put on the table there! Don't type back and you won't tilt or tilt anyone else!
