Correlation Study "Are Lower Elo's More Likely to be Banned?"

Hello everybody!

This post is mostly directed towards the members of Riot who patrol these boards. I was recently assigned a project in one of my college courses and thought it interesting to do the study on one of my favorite games that I devote a lot of time to. The assignment was to come up with a study and find if there is any correlation between two things. This is where i have to turn to Riot though, as i have no way of obtaining the information I would need for such a study. What I want to do is find if there is any correlation between rank and the percentage of bans in that elo.

For example, I would expect a much higher percent of bans at a lower elo than at a higher one.

Specifically the data I am looking for is what percent of total players in each elo get banned. Personally I find this to be really interesting and think that it would be fascinating to find if the lower elo players are indeed banned more often than those in higher elo.

I'd love if this could get noticed by a Rioter and to see if I can make this study happen, so I ask you, League community, make this post "hot" for me <3

Thanks, KnightofDestiny

Lower ELO players are probably more likely to be banned, but their ELO itself isn't the reason, but rather moreso the mindset of "ELO hell" and everyone except them being worse/having to "carry" their teammates, etc, which leads to and fosters toxicity between each other.

given that riot don't give too poops about low elo players, I would say yes.

I think plat is more likely to get banned because they're more likely to report.

MAKE THIS SHIT HOT BOIZ I WANNA KNOW WHY I KEEP RIPPIN ACCTS AT LOW ELO.. o wait i dont need a study for that.

Also it wouldn't prove a causal link because perhaps it is the fact that toxic players are just overall worse at the game and therefore in low elo and this is why they are banned.

I've been suspended on two accounts 3 times in Bronze.

People play so badly and are so clueless that its hard to tell the trolls from the non-trolls.

Well obviously most banned players are going to be in Bronze or Silver that's where 70% of the players are located.

Once you take that into account I wouldn't be surprised if there is a slight bias towards banned players being lower Elo specifically because flaming your teammates frequently puts them on tilt and this harms your chances of making a comeback in a losing game or giving the 1-2 strong players on your team a chance to make plays and carry.

Lower ELO and banning would be a false correlation due to other factors that affect how and why people get banned. People get banned due to frustration with the game and expressing such frustration in a negative way. Leading to this frustration is a number of factors, but foremost is lack of skill and lack of team cohesiveness. Only a small part of frustration actually stems from malevolent players seeking to ruin experiences. MMR is a key factor for as to how people get banned, and low MMR player pools are at all ranks. Bad players and malevolent players are dumped into the same pool due to their losing and lower MMR, leading to players with low skill being highly exposed to players who want to grief. This in turn leads to a bubbling frustration that leads to outbursts because of all these problems that swirl into a giant mess. This is also how ELO hell is born, because it can be increasingly difficult to climb out of your rank if you are dumped into the player pool of those with low MMR. Such situations also exist in the real world, where minor felons go to prison and become exposed to harder criminals who often get the minor felons wrapped up in their behaviors and lifestyle that then creates worse behavior in the minor felon on release.

As a statistics junkie. If you do get raw data. Can you notify me if that's possible? It would really be a really cool opportunity to look at the actual numbers.

This is one of the least active boards in terms of rioter participation.... LMAO.
