Seeking Clarification Regarding My 14-Day Ban: Too Severe?

I have been playing this game since Season 2 and prior to this event have never received even a chat restriction. However, I was recently hit with a 14-day ban and while I definitely agree I was being passive aggressive/toxic, I do also believe that the punishment seems a little severe given the context & my chat logs. This ban occurred after an ARAM where my teammate, playing Master Yi, was very toxic.

Background: I took a Bard portal to get one of my Meeps and since it was near a health pack, Yi flashed for it thinking I wanted the health pack (I did not). I asked my team to purchase Executioners Calling due to the enemy team having Soraka & Illaoi and he replied with, "So Lulu & GP should buy it since they're ranged". This is where I say, "yep. exactly" because I thought he was being sarcastic and trying to be funny. Apparently he was serious and this led me to asking him directly to buy the item. Master Yi responded, "I can't hit Soraka so why would I buy it". Needless to say, this aggravated me and I insulted him, which was definitely toxic of me, by pointing out his rank. This led him to calling me a %%% and flaming not only me but our teammates as well. Since I was playing this ARAM with two friends who reported the Master Yi, they informed me that he was punished as well, but I can see that it was only a chat restriction. My chat logs show me saying the word "%%%" and I can imagine this being one of the Automated System's trigger words. So given the context, chat logs, and me referring to myself with the word Master Yi called me: Was my punishment too severe? Was I somewhat baited into this punishment by Master Yi?

@Riot Tantram: I'm not necessarily asking for my punishment to be lifted; I was definitely toxic to an extent. I would just like to know if this is one of the edge cases where players were baited into using trigger words and then unjustly banned or receiving too harsh a punishment. If my 14-day ban, opposed to a chat restriction, is justified due to previous actions on my end, then I accept responsibility. I would just like some clarification from your end, thank you!

Lesson: Never repeat someone else's toxic comments. Especially hate speech. Riot has a zero tolerance for hate speech regardless of context. Even if you repeat something toxic that doesn't include hate speech, the automatic system can still tag you for being toxic.

You can put in a support ticket and plead ignorance that Riot punishes the word even in this context. You might have an outside chance of winning them over.

Yep, lesson learned. I remember reading about the situations where people were unjustly banned/punished due to a teammate telling them, "say insert phrase here and I won't troll", then reporting them. I didn't think my scenario would be flagged due to the sentence structure, but that's my fault for assuming such things. Thank you for the reply!

No. Hate speech is hate speech, whether you use it to refer to yourself or not. It has no place in a game of League among strangers. This language also has a zero-tolerance policy, and causes a 14-day ban on the first confirmed offense, which is the reason for the escalated punishment.

I completely agree. That's why I said: I would just like to know if this is one of the edge cases where players were baited into using trigger words and then unjustly banned or receiving too harsh a punishment.

If this is not case, then I'm hoping Riot Tantram can provide additional insight as to why my punishment is justified

It is not. Those cases were specifically cases where individuals would say things like "type [offensive statement here] or I feed." That's forcing a player to take a bad loss or use inappropriate language.

In this case the punishment is justified, because you opted to use those words yourself and turn his insults into a "joke." When said "joke" involves hate speech, it's not okay.

  2. I know for a fact that the person received a less severe punishment since they have played multiple games recently. If I was punished for hate speech, specifically the hate speech Master Yi called me, then why did I receive a harsher punishment?

Yes. Hate speech is zero tolerance, which means it is not okay to repeat it even if someone else called you it.

That one I cannot comment on. It may be that it's because you use the word several times, and it may be because of your specific history, and it may be because the system made a mistake on his part. As I'm unable to look into the specifics of the system, I can't do more than guess.

Normally I agree with the punishments but I have to say for this one it should be lowered to a first or second tier punishment instead of going directly to third. Yes he used hate speech but it was clearly not in the same context as others who receive similar punishments and the player was clearly unaware that he was doing anything wrong.

That being said considering these are not screenshots of chats, I've learned my lesson that people will edit them when posting. But if this is genuinely what he got punished for, I argue that it should be lowered a tier or two as a warning.

This is my only issue with the punishment I received. Was I toxic? Yes - I called the player silver and was very passive aggressive. Was I toxic for using hate speech? No - The other player used hate speech directed at me and I repeated the word multiple times in chat. I never once used hate speech that was directed towards him or anyone else. This is why I asked if saying, "he called me a %%% lol" would also be punished. If hate speech has a zero tolerance policy, then this would receive a punishment and I can't say I agree with it.

That being said considering these are not screenshots of chats, I've learned my lesson that people will edit them when posting. But if this is genuinely what he got punished for, I argue that it should be lowered a tier or two as a warning.

I know it's just my word, and I don't expect you to believe me, but I can tell you 100% this is not edited and was the chat log I received. I copy & pasted the chat log in an e-mail to myself and made this post from my office at work. I will reply within the next 2 hours with a screenshot as proof.

I have no problem accepting responsibility for my actions & the consequences associated with them. I know that the in-client reform cards don't always paint the entire picture (such as showing post game lobby chat) which is why I was hoping Riot Tantram could provide additional insight (aka smite me). If there were other logs that caused me to receive a 14-day ban, then case closed and I will serve my punishment. However, I was only given this game's chat log and this log alone does not, in my opinion, warrant a 14-day ban.
