Question on behavior and muting players

I've received a 14 day ban on my account. I didn't receive any prior warnings to behavior though I know people will try to explain that's that how it works anyway. But anyway, it's become apparent to me that the system in place for punishing player behavior makes it so that communicating at all (repeating things that others have said) or saying anything negative puts you at risk for punishment by the system if players report you so my question is simple. If I just mute everyone and go into ranked in silver games and then people report me because I didn't see what they were saying and it appear that I'm just not being cooperative or ignoring them and them think I'm not working with the team am I going to receive a punishment for a certain number of reports for that with clean empty chat logs on my end as well? Or does the act of them reporting me alone mean that reports will add up and I'll be punished for being reported by a certain number of people regardless whether I even used the chat or not?

No; refusing to communicate with your team isn't a bannable offense.

Riot encourages their players to use the mute function to help prevent toxicity/tilting, and if you mute your team in game, and don't say anything, you won't get punished, regardless of how many times you're reported.

Thank you for your prompt response. I guess that's what I'll do then. The ironic thing is I mentioned ranked but I think the games I received my ban from were normal games. I was sure that the reports would be worse in ranked since the toxicity generally is lol but this normal game the system nailed me for.

I’d like to clarify, because this isn’t a black and white issue.

Will you ever be punished for never saying anything in chat? No. Will you be punished if you refuse to communicate in any way - i.e. if you refuse to ping when it’s expected you do, if you refuse to listen to your teammates’ pings, etc? Probably not - but it can be taken into account to determine if you’re having a negative attitude in the game.

Bottom line: Feel free to mute people, so long as you ping and listen to their pings (when those things are necessary - which isn’t every game)

Of course I intend to ping things appropriately and try to pay attention to what's going on around pinged objectives, if anyone is in the jg with an enemy or something that would typically require attention and try to the best of my ability to do what I feel is best given the current situation and give the best effort that I can to win the game. I am kind of debating on muting everyone's pings as well though cause once they realize you may not hear them they may just ping spam you. Do the pings on objectives still go through if you mute the players pings or does that only stop the danger and caution pings that teammates will spam on you if they're angry with you?

Muting other players chat/pings does not prevent them from seeing your text/pings.

I would recommend not muting the pings. I would also recommend not muting the chat, but instead of that just muting them at the first sign of them being toxic. But if you feel you need to mute all at the beginning, that’s your choice, not mine.

I'll consider that. Thanks for your information and input on the matter. I don't really want to mute everyone either I just don't want to discuss things with toxic players in game if it's just going to result in me being flagged as able to be reported as well. You kinda have to give everyone a chance every game until you see whether they act like that or not but it's so common in silver it almost just seemed easier to avoid it altogether. If it's not the toxicity it's the we can't win ff gg people that try to bring you down with them too. I could give everyone a chance and mute them as needed but I may just end up feeling disappointed that I didn't mute them in the first place so yeah i don't know. I'll think about it. Thanks again.

Regarding to your story, does anyone think the report system doesn't work as properly as the community nowadays need it to?

For example: I got also suspended 14 days, and I got a chat log shown as a reason which was a positive one at the end of the game saying gg, gjp nice... just the regular things... All in a positive game & context. Still I got suspended for nothing, I wrote a player support ticket and got as an answer that I was right, but he couldn't just undo the concequences of my suspension (which were: Denial of Ranked season rewards like border, graves skins plus chromas, Summoner icons, but also the denial of my honor rewards (lvl5) the ward skin.) I dont't know if he really coulnd't do something about it or if he was just to lazy to do something about it.

But in the end I got suspended for nothing, which was really bad timed and resulted in a denial of all my rewards... How did this happen? Why did it happen? THe only thing I know is that there have to get some improvements on the system! If you get reported for nothing and it results in a suspension and even RIOT members won't take me serious, who am I to change the whole community, I indeed did not even receive a warning like wtf..?

It seems like to me it isn't really about punishing people who deserve it but just a general approach to try to decrease the amount of vulgar language and action taken against people who get multiple reports in a game or over a period of games in my case. My top lane in the normal game said he was gonna afk and gave up, my jg complained about my champion I played mid after i helped him from an enemy jg invade and we got a 2 for 1 killing the enemy jg and mid laner while I died as well. Jg continued to flame me and the adc bot lane said that the top and jg deserved reports too but he was also reporting me as well cause I was arguing with the jg complaining about my champ after I helped him out which didn't make any sense. There was an issue and multiple people said and did things that could have been considered eligible for reporting but I believe I may have gotten 3 reports that game just because of arguments and no one being happy about it but I didn't start it. But it's irrelevant in the eyes of the system and I believe it's something like that that caused me to get this ban without any prior warning.

I've never been chat restricted or anything so I don't know how long that's supposed to last or what those lesser punishments are supposed to be. Just got a surprise you're banned now instead. The community itself is defined by us as players of the game so basically, I'm the community, you're the community, everyone's the community, and if we say or do things that each other don't like we get to report each other regardless of why anything that occurred occurred. Doesn't matter why and if our chat logs are dirty then it's the ammo against us. Kinda just discourages me from speaking or communicating with anyone during the game at all which is sad because it's actually enjoyable sometimes and can be an enjoyable aspect of the game. The thing about ranked and normals though is ranked in silver there's someone cursing someone out half the time and I understand that I can and am maybe supposed to report people for it but if it doesn't bother me I don't go out of my way to do that. Two people cursing each other out in ranked? It's a common occurrence and I don't try to add to or contribute to but I think the majority of the time unless someone's really really offended by what was said or whatever happened it often goes unreported cause ranked can be stressful and maybe you still win the game, maybe you lose the game but you're so stressed out you just don't feel like reporting anyone after that cause you have the empathy to understand that this other individual may be stressed as well. Also I have to say people joke with each other all the time innocently but with with what would be considered vulgar language by the system and if everyone got reported everytime that happened you'd have a lot less people enjoying the game at least in silver. Just a matter of whether someone feels like giving you that report or not. But I play this normal and after playing the game and doing relatively fine in my lane coming to assist my jungler and after we get a 2 for 1 and defend his red buff I get complaints about my champion pick mid argue and by the end of it I'm reported and banned. I may have said something that wasn't nice but I was kinda flabbergasted after we got a positive outcome in that sequence of events that the only thing that I got from that jungler after that was complaints about the champion I was playing mid in our normal game. I don't know if I can say the ban was deserved or not but only emphasize that I had no prior warnings of any sort and it just makes me feel disappointed in the same way that maybe you get pulled over for a broken light on your car in the middle of the day by a police officer and have to pay the city money cause it doesn't matter if it's the middle of the day and you don't need the light anyway, it matters just because they said so and the city wants your money.
