Riot and Hypocrisy

The Story of Why I Left Riot Games

I quit playing LoL a while ago for several reasons. The two dominant ones were the general constant toxic level of the community, and Riot's completely misguided punishment system. Combined with other factors, the game was not fun in the least.

Then lately articles have released, first one with a number of anonymous sources detailing sexist bro culture in Riot, and far more telling, this new and very open blog.

How the hell is Riot coming down on community members for slurs and even "harassment" when they have such a cancerous company? Given past tirades by top company members before, it really underscores how lousy of a place Riot is.

Who the hell are they to police any community when their house is filled with filth? This company is not worth supporting, walk away and let them flop.

Riot's following their own punishment system to the letter, though.

You are punished for what you did. Riot is punished for what Riot did. As far as I'm aware, those employees who harassed said person were reprimanded (if it was only a small issue that they caused) to having their contract/employment terminated (For the more severe ones). And I'm pretty sure Riot is working to fix the underlying issues in their company, as well..

There is no hypocrisy here. Just you thinking that Riot can't punish you and the rest community because some people at Riot also broke rules. That's not how the world works.

"I should be allowed to get away with murder because the people who lock criminals up for murder are murderers too."

This is made using your exact logic and reasoning from the post above. What the fuck does their shitty behavior have to do with yours?

Isn't that the opposite approach that should be taken? Rather than only demanding the community behave as good as the worst of the worst, shouldn't we instead urge Riot to make sure that their internal politics are also civil?

Just like with in-game behavior, poor behavior doesn't become any more acceptable because you think someone else was behaving worse.

The standard is set by the tribunal, the community, and a man who doesn't work there anymore.

Yes, Riot needs to fix their internal environment.

No, we shouldn't stop banning toxic people.

Just because Riot is tone deaf doesn't give you license to do whatever you want in game.

could we pls stop this? i know these posts will now appear daily but cmon. if you have a company with several 1000 of members, it doesnt matter what you do. they have their own mind. some might be sexist. some racist. its not "riot" is a person who can tell their employees to instantly drop all sexist thoughts

Community polices the community through the IFS's learning machine.

Riot doesn't dictate what we report.

Subdue8/28/2018, 9:35:01 PM1 votes

As for the original post, well, the premise itself is incorrect. Riot isn't directly deciding what is acceptable behavior and what isn't. They've used Tribunal data, where we as players determined what was acceptable behavior, as a starting point for the IFS, and then continue to leverage machine learning to allow the IFS to determine and adapt as new behaviors are being reported. This is why what is acceptable in one region may not be acceptable another, where the social expectations and culture are different and people do or don't report others for different things.

Your post has to be approved in gameplay+. Any negative thread mysteriously is downvoted in other words its pointless to have the upvote downvote system. Again I'm no angel, but devils can't act as sources of justice.
