Is it bad to queuedodge with good intent?

I've just wondered, as some games I've noticed that people are raging at each other even before the match starts in champ select, or complaining about a role they can't play, so I've had moments where I've decided to "take one for the team" and dodge the queue, just to stop a toxic game before it begins. I don't mind the queue dodge timer afterwards, I'd rather wait 5 more minutes for a good game than spend at least 15 minutes in a game where everyone will be toxic and noone is having a good time. Is this a good thing though? I don't expect to be rewarded or anything, but can this damage your account rep in the long run?

To answer your final question first;

...can this damage your account rep in the long run?

As far as I know, no. Queue dodging, to my knowledge, can only incur LeaverBuster penalties, and while I've heard somewhere that it can culminate in mainline punishments (notably; bans), I haven't seen it happen, and for the largest part, LeaverBuster penalties are easy enough to recover from.

As for your primary question;

Is it bad to queuedodge with good intent?

This is, more or less, a personal moral question. We can't really give you an answer besides "it's up to you to weigh the benefits against the risks". So, that's something you kinda gotta ask yourself - "Is it bad for me to queue dodge this match, if the alternative is a toxic match where nobody's having fun?"

And, if you ask me, I'd say "no" - it's not a bad thing. You're sparing yourself from dealing with the toxic environment, and - knowing what little I do of how the game handles teams after a queue dodge - probably doing the same for everyone else in the team.

Queue dodging really isn't a moral thing. It exists to give someone an out for a variety of reasons.

Gone into queue but then changed your mind because you're tilted? Dodging is fine.

In queue and realize people are toxic (your example)? Perfect reason to dodge.

Something came up at home that you need to take care of? That's OK too.

OH MY GOD I HAVE TO POOP!!!!>!>?!! Can't think of a better reason. :D

It's really never "bad" to queue dodge in a moral sense, as it only affects you. Practically, though, if you dodge too much the Leaverbuster penalties are going to stack.

You can queue dodge however you like, only you live with the consequence.

I do remember a ban wave for dodging several years ago, but

  1. It was all manual review
  2. The players were involved in a combination of massively excessive dodging and trolling to get other players to dodge.
