We should be able to report in champ select, and here's why...

Was recently in a game, dynamic que for ranked, with a friend of mine. I qued for jungle and top, him for support and mid. I was given the top roll and unsure of who I wanted to play I didn't declare a champ. Our jungle, and first pick, declared Graves. In the ban cycle we banned Udyr, b/c broken and annoying, and he immediately freaked out saying he wanted the option to play him and we shouldn't bm by banning his champ. We explained that you're supposed to declare who you want to play to avoid that issue, and in the mean time the enemy team banned Graves, b/c broken and annoying. He then decided that he was just gonna mid and we could all essentially go to hell. I'm posting the conversation below, with all other summoner names redacted.

This kind of garbage, absolutely unacceptable behavior in champion select, is why we should be able to report people for troll picks, troll bans, or roll stealing without having to suffer through 20 minutes of hell or forcing someone to sacrifice LP and dodge.

You are now in a chat room with your full champion select team. aMalfunction joined the room. Mid joined the room. Jungle joined the room. Support joined the room. ADC joined the room. aMalfunction : so, tanky top huh? aMalfunction : lol Jungle : Ban yasuo or volibear aMalfunction : udyr good ban too Jungle : i might play him Jungle : wtf aMalfunction : might isn't a reason to leave him up Jungle : I said i might play udyr Support : sorry, aMalfunction : if you wanted him you shoulda declared him Jungle : Im not jungle bud aMalfunction : coulda fooled me aMalfunction : says jungle under your name aMalfunction : and you have smite Jungle : Nope Jungle : I Mid aMalfunction : i assume you're all in a party then? Jungle : Nope sry Jungle : Im jungle Jungle : No Jungle : No Jungle : NO Jungle : Im mid Jungle : Sry tf aMalfunction : that's not how this que works anymore "bud" Jungle : Yup going mid either way aMalfunction : you que for the role you're wanting to play Mid : ? aMalfunction : and then you play what it gives you aMalfunction : he's taking your mid Mid : wtf.. Jungle : I didnt queue for jungle and you ban my udyr Mid : report him Jungle : so sry Jungle : Report you aMalfunction : you did que for jungle Mid : pls report him aMalfunction : or it wouldn't have put you there ADC : yas u quede for jg ADC : thats the only way u'll be placed as jg Mid : im fing mid aMalfunction : fing trolls Jungle : U want me to yasuo jungle Jungle : Rly Jungle : Ya right aMalfunction : assholes like this Mid : pls report him aMalfunction : make this game horses**t Jungle : i will jungle ADC : i'll report Support left the room. ADC left the room.

@Riot Why is that sort of behavior being allowed through the cracks? Why are your customers being forced to put up with it or potentially sacrifice a series to people like that?

I'm not trying to shame this guy into better behavior, because let's face it that won't ever happen, but someone should be enforcing this "Summoner's Code" that people agree to when they create their accounts. Players like our Jungler are a massive issue in this community, and frankly are what holds the game and the community back.

The likely reason why this hasn't been implemented is that it could be subject to abuse. Frankly, I hate people who throw a fit in champ select and then the rest of the team has to deal with that individual's tantrum for 20-40 min.

Devil's advocate:

The threat of trolls reporting people who make off-meta picks would immediately force a large pool of champions to be unplayable right off the bat. The case you have made is convincing, but I wouldn't want to get reported every time I picked Heimerdinger or something.

I'm slightly sad here as I haven't ever had to deal with this once. Ever. I wondered where my luck has been going to...

Thumbs up I hope someone at Riot will see this. It's seriously unacceptable when this happens, and it shouldn't be so difficult to report someone in champ select if it's possible to do it after the game anyway. What's the big deal? Don't we have a system for this kind of behavior? It happens almost every f**king game and Riot refuses to do anything about it.

If ONLY you could somehow remove trolls from the game before your Queue.

It gets worse for you. I've have had bad experiences in Champion Select in the past and I've gone straight to Riot Support. Usually they're amazing people and are very understanding once you get past the automated responses.

So: How does it get worse? They cannot punish a person in pre-game chat if the game never starts. This means that if you queue dodge and then sent this to Riot, they cannot confirm that the behaviour happened because the game was cancelled. So you basically HAVE to play with this person and then report them at the end of the game.

Though they did tell me that they are working on having a function allowing you to report in champion select.

Allow players to drop out of queue 5 times per day with no penalty and no wait to re-queue. The odds of getting this type of issue five times is pretty low unless you are playing 10 hours a day.

You're not going to like this answer because you're the average control freak, but,

troll picks, troll bans, or roll stealing

those are all mythical creatures. Even if they existed, they would not be breaking the rules.

My typical day in ranked:

Support: I'm going mid Me: Okay, have fun with your ban :)

Usually works.

Also: What summoner's Code? I've heard that Summoners are a thing of the past :/

The reason why something like this doesnt exist is because it just puts a potential band-aid on a much larger problem.

It is pretty obvious Riot's Toxic checker AI system is only getting data from things that were said or transpired during a game. It does not get the toxic trash after 95% of all games in the post game chat. It doesnt get things in the champ select. So even if you report for these things, there is no data to support the action happened.

I had a ranked game were someone didnt get the champ they wanted so they went Teemo jungle. You can imagine how well that went. Did they ruin a ranked game for their team? yes. Will they be punished? absolutely not. Just how the system works today and has worked since day 1 almost.

The issue is Riot has a very different definition of a toxic player than their gaming base. That coupled with the fact that Riot wont ever implement a policy that would have negastive effects on their player base numbers or revenue (why would they, still a for profit company)

So the trick is to find a way to actually fight toxicity while at the same time not banning 10-20% of their player base. I personally would like to see pings expanded a little more and see Riot greatly enhance the threshold for the toxic player chat suspension. Finally I would like to see Riot completely remove the all chat feature. That exists for 1 purpose in normals and ranked and that is to taunt, harass, and provoke your opponents.

The all chat feature outside of custom games does nothing but encourage and promote toxic behavior. Sure you can disable it, but it still exists. It shouldn't. Those who want it around are those who are using it for the above reasons.
