I don't believe people understand how reporting really works.

I've seen people try to report people for being toxic and they haven't said or done anything that merits toxicity. Simply put, I've seen people on my team, the ragey, ACTUAL TOXIC ONES, hate on someone because they did something disapproving of, and then try to convince the entire team to report them unjustly. Do they know that the chat logs actually get shown? With that said, how is it that the ones actually being toxic, not realize /they/ can get properly penalized? There's sarcasm in there somewhere.

how ironic, i just got out of a game with some unreal skarner that just kept bashing mid lane beacuse he got ganked 4x in a row but he never went mid to help.

Yeah, that happens a bit too much. People can get unlucky and lose first blood by a split second, and then the jungler will decide that, that lane isn't worth ganking because they died. Happens too often.

im not certain reports do anything at all. if people are being toxic or afk or feeding the automated system catches them. so what is the purpose of reports?

I don't know how much help the reportings are, but they /do/ work/. I've seen it in action, and I've been a victim (was my fault, I said something pretty vulgar and offensive).

well ive gotten the 'a player you have reported has been punished' but did my report actually do anything? or did the automated system catch the person without any help and then send me that message to make the placebo that is the report button feel even better?

Reports tell the system who to look at.

That means your report triggered a review that resulted in punishment. The system does not check people that don't get reported. Even if you don't get a notification, your reports still have weight and contribute to a player's case for review later, as long as it is accurate.
