Confused over what seems to be an excessive chat restriction

Feel free to call me out if you guys have other chat logs that support this restriction, because I would legitimately like to see them (and find out why they weren't in the reform card). The person I was arguing with here was quite literally feeding on purpose and trolling the game, which he (and his duo) admitted as much before the game even started in champ select. I know this doesn't excuse poor behavior on its own, but I think in combination with the fact that 1) I only exhibited the behavior in one game; 2) the behavior wasn't really that bad; and 3) the other person was actually inting, trolling, and instigating the arguments in chat; that this punishment is excessive and a little unfair. A warning would have more than sufficed here.

Please remember that it doesn't matter if someone else is playing poorly, trolling, or instigating anything. Fighting fire with fire is not okay and will get you a punishment just as harsh as if you started the fire.

This is just a case of lack of context; this particular case was him trying to chase down a kill and getting collapsed on and then talk shit to our lane about how the enemy was better. I unfortunately did take this one opportunity to throw a little salt. I'm (again) not arguing that I was an angel this game, just that it feels unfair to get punished after one (relatively small) mistake. It doesn't feel like punishments are applied consistently to others the way its been applied to me.

He hovered a bunch of bunch of troll champs before settling on that one, and Riot has the chat logs to show that both him and his duo partner intended to troll before he even locked in.

Please remember that it doesn't matter if someone else is playing poorly, trolling, or instigating anything. Fighting fire with fire is not okay and will get you a punishment just as harsh as if you started the fire.

I said as much in the original post; even if the guy didn't deserve being called bad twice (which is the full extent of my "constant harassment"), it seems like a punishment should take more than one instance. If we had the full game logs it would tell another story.

In this case, he was literally inting my lane.

I can understand your frustration. It is possible to be punished with as little as one game. I don't really see anything that'd throw you over the top in this one game, so it makes me think you recently (within the past 3 months or so of active play) had another chat restriction or suspension for negative communication.

I understand why you would think that, because that is exactly what I thought. I'm here to beg Riot to either show those other logs (which I honestly don't believe exist), or confirm that the tolerance for punishment is actually this low. I certainly haven't been punished in the last 12 months.

Did you take a 12 month break? The punishment and feedback system doesn't track time in days or months, it tracks in terms of games played. If you were punished, then took a break for a year or even 2 years, then did something punishable when you returned it would be punished the same as if you had done it within a week or two of your other punishment.

I've been playing consistently the entire time. I just added a comment with Riot's response, they confirmed that this single game warranted a punishment.

Don't respond to someone inting your lane, just go somewhere else on the map. Report them and they will be removed from the game permanently. Riot will deal with them and then they will never be able to ruin your or anyone else's game again.

Nope, they absolutely won't. This guy is still playing games every day, averaging over 10 deaths per game, even including the games where actually tries and doesn't int.

Edit: Also just checked his duo partners, and they also int about half the games. LOL Excellent work Riot--you are definitely punishing the correct person here.

Riot errs on the side of caution when dealing with these things. And reports take a while to reach human eyes.

If you want those people looked into more directly you could try submitting a support ticket with their summoner names and maybe screenshots of their match histories. Riot will evaluate directly and deal with them accordingly.

Hey, I know this is somewhat unrelated, and I want to be super cautious about asking it, but I have to ask:

It’s entirely possible that the Sivir is essentially “ban-baiting.” I’m definitely a fan of off-meta picks myself, so I know that seeing them isn’t an immediate sign of trolling. I’ve actually been carried by an “ADC” Singed in Ranked before. However, I’m finding more and more situations like this being posted in Player Behavior, and it honestly concerns me.

I know certain words and phrases auto-trigger punishments, and I’m honestly okay with that. I also realize that Forums actually house the vocal minority do League’s player base. But I gotta ask: is the practice of “ban-baiting” on Riot’s radar? Have they considered some short term steps to try and alleviate the possibility of such? I know that Tantrum is already investigating potentially deeper flaws with reporting and punishment, and that’s fine, but even something as simple as adding an additional report category or (more specifically) maybe adding triggers in the report themselves that would prompt quicker review of all of the game’s chat logs?

(P.S. Please rest assured, I’m not CreampEye. I definitely have my suspicions about him but still haven’t reconciled some of the concerns that r000t’s blog posts on the matter have caused within me. I thank you for your patience in this matter.)

You answered your own question in the second sentence of your post; "the person I was arguing with..." key word here is arguing. Don't argue with people in the middle of a match please. It's very demoralizing (right word? Kills team morale) and distracting.

I don't think you understand the point of this post. I was negative in this game. I don't think that I was extremely negative, but I was negative.

However, my argument is that everyone is occasionally negative and it seems like punishing every individual instance of minor negativity (especially when it's instigated by a player who is literally losing the game on purpose) shouldn't happen, and generally doesn't happen (except to me, in this case).

Oh yeah they definitely should not punish every individual instance of minor negativity. If they did, I would be punished by now. Thankfully, they look for some sort of consistency, and not just drop the hammer on you the first time.

Riot confirmed this single game warranted a punishment on its own:

Even one game where you misuse chat can be enough to warrant a penalty on the account. We are very firm in making League of Legends as positive as possible, and if a player is being reported for negative behavior, we look into a game. If we find negativity, we will take action. Otherwise a player won't be aware of the negativity they're causing with their conduct.

We do revert punishments if they were falsely placed. This punishment was reviewed, and you were being negative in this game. We issued the lightest punishment we have to encourage you to reconsider how you behave in chat from here on!

There you have it folks. If someone trolls your game, don't say anything mean or you will be punished and the person who is actually ruining games will not.
