I've helped countless people learn how to play, I'm at level 4 honor, I've introduced people to League of Legends and I get banned for flaming teammates, I feel like this is insanely unfair.

I'm curious as to what you guys think about this, is Riot being unfair with their punishments?

Since everyone is crying to see my chatlog here it is, damn, i said %%%got =/ I don't see the point in any of this though, I just wanted peoples opinions on getting banned for flaming, i didn't expect the community to be filled with so many white knights telling me that i'm a bad boy who doesn't deserve to play lmao

Yes. It's completely fair.

Does buying a ticket to the movies give you the right to scream at people or curse their names? Does buying 10 tickets to the movies give you that same right? How about 1000?

The point being: no matter how much you are a patron of a business, you do not have the right to abuse that business' other customers. If you begin to be abusive (or are caught being abusive) to other customers, the business will tell you to leave and not come back. From a business standpoint, it just makes more sense, as your abuse is likely causing more than just one person to think twice about supporting League, be it by playing or purchasing RP/etc.

From a community standpoint, Riot cares about their players. Their mottos for their offices are all variations on "Players First." And they don't let each other forget it. From their mind, it'd even be better to lose a little bit of revenue by banning toxic players who spend a lot of money than it would be to have a toxic community that spends a little more money. They want a nice, open, non-toxic but competitive community for the casual and hardcore players alike.

That makes a lot of sense, mostly. My only question is when is Riot going to make a server for adults who can handle some bad words without crying? lol (it's a joke, relax) Riot would still get our money and people like me would be able to play without fear of being banned over bad words or arguing. People scared of naughty words can play in the kiddie pool while big boys and girls can play with other adults who don't give a shit about simple words that in reality don't mean anything. We're just talking shit, haven't you ever played Super Smash or Mario Kart with a few friends and just "you son of a fucking bitch!!!" it's all in good fun

The server already is for adults. You won't be punished for bad words. Hell, I cuss a lot, I'll admit it. I cuss in game a lot. It's a lot of "fuck" and "shit" and "fuck me forgot to x". The difference is I keep a positive attitude and I don't start flaming specific players.

Riot will never enable people to flame others. It's just not in the spirit of having a good community.

But banning someone for talking shit seems excessive.

Chat restriction seems perfectly reasonable, and if i fuck up again, just increase my chat restriction every time lol, don't ban my ass for 2 weeks, it's just not cool

That's not how it works. And before you ask, yes, stacking chat restrictions were tried before and failed. People ended up just taking advantage of that system to be as poorly behaved as possible by using up their allotted messages with insults, then switch over to poor gameplay behavior, such as intentionally griefing/feeding.

The punishment tiers are as follows:

  • 10-game chat restriction
  • 25-game chat restriction
  • 14 day suspension from game
  • Permanent ban

Players that are punished move up the tiers of punishment and can skip over it with frequent or severe cases of poor behavior. Good sportsmanship exhibited over a significant amount of time and games will reduce the punishment tier you currently are.

That can happen if you use hate speech or tell someone to kill themselves (as examples) - extreme toxicity can cause you to skip to a 2 week ban off the bat.

No I've never used hate speech or something as intense and telling someone to kill themselves, I talk a lot of shit but it always has to do with the game. "dude you fucking suck at last hitting" "wow really? nice awareness" "You should go back to bots"

Now that I think about it, I actually don't use a lot of bad language when i'm flaming

But here's the thing, if you keep doing that over and over again, the penalties stack up, eventually leading to things such as this 14-day ban and eventually Permanent Ban.

It should also be added, that anyone recently off a 14-day ban is on their last warning until they show signs of reform and drop down a tier. This means if you continue to insult other players in chat, a valid report against you is much more likely to have that permanent ban issued.

People got banned according to their own chat logs. What other's said doesn't matter. The bigger point is that they chose not to mute them, and instead talk back more crap, which ended up to where they are now.

It is personal if you claim that I rank shame when I never did that, but allow people who rank shame me all the time to go free without even a warning. Or when you delete my messages of my OWN thread cause you consider them as spam, but the actually offensive/spam messages by others are left to exist.

So why are you so personal towards me? I did hear rumors from higher places that forum mods have a hate mood towards me no matter what, will that turn out to be true? I normally don't believe rumors but your little crusade towards me from 2 days ago is pretty much that.

I didn't need any convincing. People should be judged on their individual behavior. Trying to make excuses like "I was defending myself" only gives toxic players an out.

I already said i used foul language, i was being toxic and all that, my question was do you think it's unfair that Riot bans people who have spent money, many hours of their lives playing and promoting League, recruiting players (who have probably also spent money on League) simply for saying some "bad" words? or did i deserve to be banned for 2 weeks for calling someone a dumbass? i'm interested in peoples opinions on this

No one gets special treatment if you spent your money or not. Do be reminded that you don't own your account, you're typically "renting" it from Riot, plus you have also broken the Summoner's Code ToS of which you agreed to.

To hell with the Summoner's Code, the ToS is just not cool, people who spend money SHOULD get special treatment, but i'm not here to argue, I just want to hear peoples opinions on the matter.

Yes I did, but for obvious reasons I assumed people get banned for cheating/exploiting bugs, things like that, not for saying a few words that are deemed "bad" by society and Riots ToS.

Toxicity is still not welcomed here at all. You're just giving everyone in your team a shitty time with your attitude. Even if Riot knew you'd spend $100 every day, they'd rather ban you away from their game instead of being greedy for $$.

And before you say "there's a Mute button so they wouldn't listen to my crap":

  1. You can use it too. But you chose not to. Why?

  2. Having a Mute button doesn't give you free rights to be a jerk. You can still be both muted & reported.

Mute button is just there to help remove the irritation from certain toxic people. But of course, that doesn't mean they can still get away with it. Mute & report both can still be done at the same time.

Again, how can we know? How is your punishment based on which chat lines? That's why everyone needs the chat logs, so that all readers can try to give proper feedback. Believe me, you're definitely not the first person who got banned & chose to come here & post a thread about it. Otherwise, you could've just submit a ticket to Riot Support instead.

Do know there's a difference between "Aww fuck" and "Fuck you". Your punishment relates to the latter words. Most readers here will have to assume this too, as people can't actually get banned for just saying "Aww fuck".

But in my original post I was asking for opinions on whether or not people think it's unfair for people to be banned over flaming (of course you already know where i stand on the fairness of the situation) I simply don't believe the punishment fits the crime.

It was even worse when I got banned for tea bagging in Halo, ridiculous lmao

I would say it is definitely fair. Having money or spending money does not give you the right to abuse other people.

So how is it unfair? You broke the rules. Rules you should have known would result in some type of punishment, but for some reason you believe that is unfair? Case in point dont do the crime if you can do the time! We all agreed to the ToS/Summoner Code for this game. We all abide by the rules and those who dont get punished accordingly. The money you spent on this game was from your consent only. No one forced you to buy RP, and Riot kept their end of the bargain as they did give you the right amount of RP. You keep your account as long as you stay in the rules. You obviously didnt which resulted in a punishment!

And yet it is, not only in this game, but in real life as well! You still havent explained why its unfair. If all you have to go by is that Words shouldnt be a bannable offense, Ill tell you once you hit the real world your life is going to be very difficult if you still have that kind of mentality!

Don't get personal with me, i'm 25 and you don't know anything about me besides this post, i understand the real world and i have the same opinion, you can indeed have a law suit filed against you for using "bad words" which i also believe to be extremely unjust. Well this isnt your game. This is Riot, and like the real world, they have certain rules and policy you must abide by. You dont like it by all means find another game that lets you get away with doing that, but Riot as for a number of years has always had this type of policy!

If you live in NA, there's literally a handful of true phrases you can't say. Try again on that front.

And as for why it's unfair, try this on for size: Focusing on chat toxicity is causing chat toxicity. Since you love real-life parallels so much: Prison sentences increase recidivism. It's a linear correlation. The same is true for punishing defensive and retaliatory players; their 'toxicity' stems from frustration at being subjected to the same behaviors over and over, behaviors that ARE intended to ruin their gameplay experience. The PC police may not like what they say back to those genuinely awful people getting off on ruining something for another person, but as Riot tells us all the time, 'the mute button exists for a reason'. It's not fair for Riot to police how we can talk or what we can say when there are tools in place for players to protect themselves from hearing things they don't want to already. It's not fair for Riot to take an accusatory tone with players who are statistically just frustrated with someone who is actively working to frustrate them, calling us bad people for not keeping our cool in the face of someone with lots of practice at making people lose their cool. The honest truth is that it's unfair because Rioters are no better than us, when you get down to the brass tacks. Challenge a member of the Behavior team, here or in a ticket, and they'll tear into you exactly like you're trolling their ranked game- they'll just copy-paste a snippet from their bots and pretend there's no context around it to give themselves the moral high ground.

So TL;DR? It's unfair because Riot holds players to a higher standard than they can personally uphold.
