Unlock Permanently Banned Accounts For Reformed Players

Old School GGeZ··62 votes·121,705 views

I'm sure everyone in the community knows friends who has been toxic and inappropriate in their league games. Some of you may even know friends who have gotten banned for a week, 2 weeks or even permanently banned. Some of these players don't realize the harshness of the punishment riot can bring to your account.

Well, I happen to be that person. I was permanently banned for saying a bunch of stupid things that meant nothing to me at the time. I truly feel bad for the people that had to go through my behavior. I severely regret the hundreds of dollars I spent on the game only for it to go to waste. That's why I'm here to make a statement and tell anyone that exhibits toxic behavior to stop now, it will only get worse.

I feel like many people that have been permanently banned, didn't know the true punishment to behaving in such a way. I also feel that many perma-banned players have been reformed, myself included and want to continue playing League of Legends with their group of friends. I believe that Riot should unlock all permanently banned accounts starting fresh this new season. This will allow everyone to get a chance to reform and prove themselves on the Summoner's Rift.

Please consider unlocking permanently banned accounts this upcoming season. I'm sure the community will come together again. Thanks, summoner 13

I'd rather their accounts be given to the needy.

Yes that's right. Give toxic player banned accounts to the homeless if they have $600+ worth of skins on them.

RiotRiot Tantram40 votes

This, I can get behind.

Seriously though, perma-banned accounts aren't going to be re-opened.

Spideraxe2 votes

Curious is it because you can't due to coding or is it because it's a very firm stance

Paquay14 votes

Firm stance. They tried to give permabanned players a chance in the past to reform and it turned out horribly.

Basically, the people who ruined thousands of games also ruined the chance for themselves and others to ever get their account back. Ironic no?

That was actually more of a failure on riots part than anything else. They had a very flawed experiment with a very small sample size( seriously, look at the methodology and metrics used). To be honest I think they pushed and hoped it would fail so they can have the "oops, we tried that" excuse.

It's pretty much....."some people from 5+ years ago failed so we are just going to say fuck it and never try again and get it right" It really is the LOL equivalent of a parent saying " your big brother crashed the car 5 years ago so we are never going to give you a chance".

But these players have been given multiple warnings (except under extreme circumstances and fuck this people) and punishments before getting to the permaban point.

I'd feel differently if you got permabanned right away for any infraction, but these accounts have had multiple opportunities. Why give them another chance to screw up more games?

People and circumstances change over the years+. Plus, what the community tolerates changes from year to year and what riot bans for is very subjective, especially if you get a ban from a manual review.

Well, i mean, anytime anyone logs in for a game, that is a chance for them to screw up games for people lol.

Paquay5 votes

Yeah, but that does not mean we should go back in time and take away the punishment for their actions. They have the ability to start again and still play, but not on that account.

Look at it as restitution.

So having the account locked up for years+ isn't punishment? They literally took away someones time and effort( and money too, if they spent any) away from them.

Paquay6 votes

And that is the punishment for what they did. It's black and white. It's not like some kind of hidden agenda Riot has against toxic players.

If you are in school and decide you are going to screw off and not do homework and you eventually fail high school, is it ok if you just ask them in 5 years and they give you a diploma as a courtesy? No of course not. Failing and missing out on your diploma is the consequence of your actions.

And these players' actions have consequences. If i stopped making car payments now, they'd repo my car. I can't get it back in a few years because I made some bad decisions and want to rectify them. I would say a lot more time money and effort goes into the car than a game.

While you are correct in your statements, you are comparing apples to oranges. Everyone knows when you agree to pay x amount of money for a car and you don't you will get in trouble. That's simple and fair enough. However it's riot's banning system and what is tolerated by the community that is an ever evolving beast. Couple that with very subjective and arbitrary punishments and you do have legit reasons to visit past permaban accounts. Did you land on a liberal auditor who is trigger happy? Did lil jimmy get insulted in a game cause you told him not taking tp hurt the team? Did a premade all report you because you didn't gank for the 8 cs Shen at 12 min? Congrats, you were either banned or had reports racked up against you. Quick side note before people say 1 or 9 reports it is all the same. It actually is not.....here is why...each report has "weight" attached to it....so while the 8 cs shen's report weight maybe in the toilet, one of his buddies may be a lot higher and carry more weight towards a punishment.

Paquay3 votes

Yes that is comparing apples and oranges so I will go with something a little more accurate.

In Washington (and several other states) it is now legal to smoke marijuana in private places. It used to be illegal to buy, sell, or possess any of it without w medicinal permit. Now that it is legal and society has changed, should we dig up all the old records and give everyone who was busted previously a clean pass?

The answer is no. They broke the rules that were in place at that time and were punished accordingly. This happens all the time. Things change. But the punishment remains in place because you broke the rules of that time.

TrulyBland6 votes

Report weight is (at least currently) not a thing. So yes, 1 or 9 reports is exactly the same. Apart from that, it not like that matters, since reports are a necessary condition, not a sufficient condition. Being reported without exhibiting bannable behaviour doesn't get you banned.

I'd agree with your idea that as standards change it might make sense to revisit older permabans... but that's not really the case currently. If anything, permanent suspensions are given out more readily these days, while the more general idea of what is considered negative behaviour hasn't really changed much at all.

What resources? It is insanely easy to un-ban an account (It is about on par as sending a copy pasta response as far as physical work goes). It's not like they have to delve through tons of code or anything.

I mean, if they wanted to they could un-ban every single banned account in the NA region in under 2 hours.

Kei1432 votes

maybe for a 1 time thing. What happens after a week? they need to go back and manually unban them again ?

Are there resources required to monitor them after?

If they just got permabanned, are they going to get unbanned immediately upon the next wave?

If they've been unbanned once, and get banned again, do they get unbanned in the next wave?

Systems are not a 1 time thing, it's an on-going effort.

Seriously though, perma-banned accounts aren't going to be re-opened.

You've already re-opened permabanned accounts and you have people that actually check people for behavioral changes to actually unban permabanned players.

Now I just need to run into the Singed Mid OTP Rioter who constantly feeds and ints for a free win again while he wonders why his team is mad at him.

RiotRiot Tantram18 votes

You've already re-opened permabanned accounts

No, we don't. If a ban is unjustified, it is lifted or reduced. However, correctly issued perma-banns are not lifted. Ever.

Krys Star6 votes

What about The Rain Man? He had his permban reduced to 2 weeks last year considering he was intentionally feeding. Explain that one please? :D

RiotRiot Tantram17 votes

It's called a 'Shield' ban. An indefinite ban is issued on the account until the player writes in, at which time an appropriate penalty is applied. This is often used to protect compromised accounts or to immediately stop harmful behavior which an appropriate penalty is discussed.

They've already been lifted before. In fact a few of your Professional players are some of the ones that's been permaban lifted.

I used to not really believe Neacey about how your company operates, but now it's becoming more and more believable as each month passes.

Pro players have not had their perma-bans lifted. This is incorrect.

So explain Jensen/Incarnati0n's ban lift. The man who DDoS'd kids

Zombiemaster5 votes

Jensen received a punishment similar to Tyler1's. All of his accounts were permanently banned, and any future ones created would also be permanently banned. He had also received an indefinite suspension from pro play. When Riot "unbanned" Jensen, these were the bans that were lifted. He was allowed to create new accounts and eventually allowed back in pro play. However, just like anyone else who had a justified permanently banned account, Jensen did not receive any of his old accounts back. He had to start on a fresh new one.

Kei1435 votes

they've had their their e-sports competition rights ban lifted. Not the account itself.

82833308DEL13 votes

Seriously tho. What if someone spend 500$ plus on that account, and then banned for saying a curse word or other vulgar language. People have bad games, if you slip off one bit, you could lose a ton of money. This is unreasonable and unjustified, other video games like counter strike would never "perma ban" a player, they would simply give them 2 weeks off. Riot, at least give the money back to the people that spend countless hours grinding and playing the game and spent a ton of money. Have some heart.

RiotRiot Tantram18 votes

, and then banned for saying a curse word or other vulgar language

People don't get banned for curse words or vulgar language. Shit, shit, fuck.

People have bad games, if you slip off one bit

There is leniency built into the system because we understand competitive games cause stressful situations. Players that are perma-banned are frequent offenders who have been warned many times, or people with aggregious offenses.

What if someone spend 500$ plus on that account

Spending money gives you content to enjoy in the game. It does not give you a free pass to ruin the experience of others.

Darlkin1 votes

what if it was just a few games out of thousands, showing no sign of it being an ongoing behaviour but rather something more attributed to more of an emotional back lash? even tho they had never recieved any punishment before the permanent ban?

Its a fucking video game my guy, if being rude or annoying is really that offensive over a virtual game then hit the mute button, it was implemented for a reason, i guess you could say ''they shouldn't have to'' well then there would be no point in a mute button. If you put money into a game (especially a lot) or even dont put any it shouldn't matter its a video game you shouldn't take away peoples hard earned money because they rage......If people are really that intolerant maybe they shouldn't be playing.

Killed Inaction1 votes

The problem with that is that every single player who has ever played the game of League of Legends on their own account has agreed to the Terms of Service and agreed to obey the Summoner's Code, and acknowledged that they understood the penalties for infractions. If someone else plays on your account and does something bannable, that's bannable in and of itself, because account sharing is prohibited under the aforementioned Terms of Service.

For that reason, any behavior that does not follow the Summoner's Code, or which goes contrary to the rules set in the Terms of Service, can be punished, regardless of the amount of RP bought by the person breaking those rules.

They aren't taking away your money. You spent your money on a privilege (the ability to use skins/champions/rune pages/boosts/etc. which you bought with RP) which you agreed Riot could take away from you for breaking their rules. They're not taking away money, they're taking away a privilege. Just because you didn't read the Terms of Service and Summoner's Code doesn't mean they don't apply to you. Just because you spent money doesn't mean you're immune to the rules.

I can turn your comment back around. If people are really that intolerant of other people's mistakes, that they would flame them for any little thing, maybe they shouldn't be playing, yes?

TheHeroicMan2 votes

No because once again its a fucking video game and people are going to get angry and harp on shit, toxicity will never stop and that will never stop. The people that are too intolerant to deal with that aren't strong enough for the internet i guess.

Killed Inaction4 votes

Maybe the people who can't remain calm and play the game for fun aren't strong enough for the internet. Seems to me that not being toxic takes more tolerance than tolerating toxicity. Something to think about.

I have proof in my riot support ticket of one of an old account of mine being banned for using curse words to a friend in game. The Riot support response is quoted as "Now, regarding the context of what has been said, like Heuronymous has explained, it does not matter. Even if it was a joke between friends, it may have upset the other players since this is a 5v5 game and not a 2v2. We have to think of everyone's experience in the game and we simply do not want such language in the game."

RiotRiot Tantram7 votes

Curse words are not penalized. Cursing AT people consistently will be penalized. Hate speech is a different matter. Post with your old account and I'll be happy to look at the logs.

I have no idea how much time i have been permabanned.

Could have been a year , 8 months , I dont know , loong time ago.

Is there by any chance , that you can remove the ban and put the account " under eye"? Like , I have to compromise myself to do certain rulles or some sort of way , because , I haven't played the game much after the perma ban. Creatinga new account and getting all the content takes way too much time .

Life has changed- Besides, this account has been online since the 1st season if i'm not mistaken..

Despite all my shity behaviour , has you can see on the chat logs , it would be nice.
