The Automatic Ban System and its HUGE flaw.

Ganja Gosu·1/25/2016, 2:00:36 PM·3 votes·1,996 views

Seriously,

I know that i'm mostly gonna receive hate from a lot of the trolls I am writing about. But lets be honest with ourselves for a second. We have all been in games with a person who is clearly just not trying. In a ranked game this is a clear cause for some frustration. Yet that person can just report after the game for "offensive language" and an automatic ban can be levied with NO INVESTIGATION on the person who just went 0-12.

My first point. How much gold does me calling a guy a "bitch" for intentionally feeding give the other team compared to that guy feeding? I understand that being called that name wont make him preform better. Bu you dont get rewarded for actually trying to make your team lose.

My second point. The mature language filter exists for a reason. People cannot dumb down my second amendment right just because they are doing poorly.

In closing im curious why league lets us chat at all. There is no reason o chat to other team. NONE. and it gives them an excuse to put free reports on a person just because they like to see the guy who is trying their hardest go down with a ban.

It is sad that this Community is filled with little nerds who got made fun of too much. What is even more sad is those same poeople work for riot. I will probably get in trouble for saying that, Which honestly proves my point even more. Its a fact people go on tilt. Its a fact that people have a bad game. Why are we automatically punishing people for facts of life. Riot needs to STOP BEING LAZY WITH THEIR BANS. Blizzard support is able to fully investigate all of their issues with players without an automatic system. Why is riot so lazy? What do they even do all day while taking our money? I know its not fixing Mundo. Thank you all for your time if you made it to the end of my rant.

It honestly amazes me how stupid people are.

People cannot dumb down my second amendment right

So is someone trying to make you play Caitlyn without having your gun?

Not to mention that if you are talking about your first amendment, it's still completely wrong. Read a book ffs.

Just swear at the screen without typing anything... it's rather easy to do even when you are mad.

Perhaps they stopped trying because you started swearing at them, we have all made one big mistake because we were quite focused yet then someone gets on our back about it instead of you know.. worrying about thier own lane.

if you can't play in a team then this isn't the game for you. you have to deal with all sort of people, here on this game and out there in the real world. Stop being a horrible brat... herp derp.... people are offended by the things I say its' their fault.. no it's not... just own up to the fact your actually a horrible person that no one wants to be around. You are your friends can joke around all they want in your own private time but this is a public game with other people with different experiences to you. think about the experince of other people rather than just yourself all the time.

Second amendment only applies to the government, private companies can do what ever the hell they want and what they want is people to enjoy thier gaming experience not have some di ck head typing obsenities at them.

There's a simple answer to your questions though I doubt you'll like it. Simply put, Riot won't remove features just because people would abuse and misuse them to be jerks to other people: instead they'll just remove the jerks and be done with it. Also, one report is as good as 9 reports in any given game, and if they're false reports, then the person who made the report will be the one who gets punished instead of you.

From Understanding the Tribunal:

1) What's the point of having a language filter if I can get banned for 'adult' language? a) We aren't out to punish players who use adult language; in fact, very few players are ever banned for saying stuff like "f***, I missed that skill shot" or "damn, fing close game!" However, the language filter is not an excuse to verbally abuse someone in the game. When you verbally abuse or harass someone by calling them "fing *****" or "ngger noob", that's when you've crossed the line and will be punished by the Tribunal. I've said this before and I'll say it again, we aren't trying to clean online games of adult language; we're trying to reform or get rid of jerks who like to verbally abuse and harass other players.

4) That player in my game was far worse than me. Why am I banned??? a) I'll keep this one simple: retaliation isn't OK. Reacting to a toxic player by being toxic just incites that player to be even worse--it also ruins the game for up to 8 other players. It is far, far worse to watch two people yelling at each other all game than it is to watch 1 player ranting into blank space. Almost everyone in the game can find someone out there that behaves worse than they do--but so what? Finding someone worse doesn't justify your behavior or justify retaliation. We expect more out of our players. What players often don't realize is... those other players in your game that you thought were worse? Nearly 100% of the time, those players were banned even before you were. If someone is being toxic, just report them and move on. If you retaliate, both of you will be banned. It's really that simple.

From Ulanopo's Knowledge Base:

I want to complain about my ban, but I didn’t link my Reform Card.

We get a lot of that here and, sadly, you’re not likely to get much in the way of sympathy or help until you post the Card. We need the context and we need to know that we’re getting the whole story. Don’t take it personally, just post the Card.

Freedom of Speech!!!!!”

Doesn’t apply. No really. If we’re talking about American law, the First Amendment only applies to the government making laws that prohibit speech and, even then, freedom of speech isn’t absolute. For example, you can’t incite a riot, plan to kill the president or yell fire in a crowded theater.

Also, there’s nothing in the First Amendment that protects you from the consequences of your speech. People are fired all the time for making derogatory comments about their employer. My workplace, for example, has a social media policy that says that I can be terminated for badmouthing the company. They don’t ask for passwords and access as some companies have been known to do, but it wouldn’t be all that difficult to find me on the internet, knowing my real name, phone number and address.

People who report are simply being oversensitive. The mute button exists for a reason.”

Let’s start with the Riot quote on this (link (http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?p=30696571#post30696571)): Why is verbal abuse punishable if there is a mute button/language filter? Players shouldn’t need to rely on features like the mute button or language filter to engage with other players in positive ways. When a player verbally abuses another player and forces him to use the mute button, they have already created a negative experience for that player.

Simply put, Riot says no. You can scream and cry all you want, but it is their house and their rules.

With that out of the way, I think the topic deserves some further discussion. The theory is that, if people resolved to care less, then they would be happier. I often refer to this as “Argument from Stoicism” and I think it is a fairly weak philosophy because it places the burden on the person being expected to endure the behavior rather than the person exhibiting the behavior. “You should be able to handle it” is just a flimsy excuse for being a bully or a jerk. I have to be the bigger man so that you can do whatever you want? That hardly seems fair.

There is also the issue of how I spend my limited free time. Like most people, I am constantly required to make value judgments between the different forms of entertainment that are available to me and, let's be honest, we live in an age of nearly limitless entertainment options. If I'm having a bad day in League, I can just fire up Steam and play a whole bunch of games that don't require me to put up with someone's BS.

This is not an issue of weakness or thin-skin; it's a question of choosing activities that don't leave me feeling frustrated and angry. Too many of those experiences and I'll just find something else to do. Riot knows this.

EDITED 18 JULY 2014

“If you kids report and punish things like this, you’re going to be in trouble when you get out in the real world.”

This is a subset of the oversensitivity argument, but I feel it warrants separate treatment.

You're making the highly unwarranted assumption that the people who punish for "noob" lack real-world experiences. If you were to ask the TBI regulars, you would find that almost all of us are at least in their late 20's, if not significantly older. Most of us have at least undergraduate degrees. So, this idea that we're all naive little children is more than a little silly.

Also, we know that professional players dislike people who spend their time typing because math. Not only are the report rates for the highest tiers not significantly lower than anywhere else (this from Lyte), but the pros know how that kind of behavior affects play. Someone who is on tilt is throwing the game just as much as the person who is playing poorly.

The truth of the matter is that the loose cannons end up having their misbehavior overshadow their skill. Look at Dennis Rodman. There has never been a better rebounder. Ever. But his legacy is not that he was basically a human vacuum. No, it's that he was out of control, both on and off the court.

In short, this is a stupid argument if you know anything about the people who are reporting and punishing you.

“I should be allowed to speak however I like to people who started it or are griefing me.” “I was provoked or taunted. I should be allowed to defend myself.” “Why did you vote to punish me when others were behaving worse?”

You should know that Riot specifically instructs jurors to ignore most of the conduct of people in a case other than the accused. The reason for this is rather simple: rather than one person causing trouble, you now have two –or more. In my more cynical moments, I have phrased it thus:

Timmy, Tommy and Sarah are trapped in an elevator. Timmy loses his temper and soils himself. Tommy gets angry at the smell and decides to retaliate by soiling himself. Now Sarah is trapped with two smelly idiots. Don’t be Timmy or Tommy. Stop ****ing your pants.

An informal poll of the Tribunal regulars shows that most jurors are willing to excuse a certain amount of response to someone who is attacking you, but that it isn’t considered an excuse for you to become toxic in response. You get MAYBE one or two lines of response. Anything more than that and you’re part of the problem.

From Lyte (link (http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?p=27540071#post27540071)):

We strongly believe that it is not OK to retaliate. If a player refuses to cooperate and says something negative, then players should ignore the player and report them after the game. Players can ignore or mute players by pressing the “Mute” button on the Scoreboard [when you hit TAB] in the game.

Emphasis mine.

“Riot bans people because they make money off of forcing people to create new accounts and repurchase the skins.”

Just stop. This is a really silly argument. I didn’t pay for my account any more than you did and while I have bought a number of things, I didn’t have to. There’s nothing relevant to competitive play that I couldn’t have bought with IP.

Also, Riot actively discourages people from making new accounts.

From Lyte: (link (http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?p=33432435#post33432435))

Actually, if we're permabanning you we don't want your money or your time. Just find another game.

If I may chime in

The second first amendment gives you the right to free speech, NOT the right to an audience.

Also continuing on, "little nerds who got bullied too much" don't need to be bullied online either. I'm not calling the internet a safe haven, but it should be our individual duties to make sure that people can feel like they're in a safe environment. We shouldn't be defending the actions of toxic people by saying "lol it's gonna happen, if you can't beat em', join em'". Instead we should act a bit nice, in hopes that someone else catches on.

Also, League lets us chat because it's better to say "We should splitpush instead of teamfight", rather than ping the top tower and have everyone try to siege top tower.

If you think that being discourteous is acceptable and expressing yourself in a manner which is demeaning to others is a right of yours, you are gravely mistaken.

Mature language filter exists for a reason and while it can filter inappropriate words, it does not give you the green light to flame/harass or otherwise call other players offensive names.

Getting frustrated is not an excuse for verbal harassment or offensive language in game directed towards anyone.

If it is your right to say whatever you wish to those ruining the game for you, I would say it is completely justified for these players to troll and feed b/c it would be their right to exercise their mice and keyboards as they wish as well. To prevent exactly this is why there is a system in place.

Speaking of facts of life, here's one: you will encounter people in life whether at schools, colleges, universities, or workplaces with whom you will just not get along with at all. They will annoy you constantly and will ruin your experience wherever you are. If you take this same attitude of yours from the game to actual situations you face around you, then you will run into problems. You will have to put w/ these people in all aspects of your life and if this is how you will behave, you will only end up hurting yourself whether it be your tilt in your studies, sports, or your job.

I am sorry you have to endure that level of toxicity but w/ dynamic queue and other features where you can play with a group of friends, you can limit your negative experience. In addition, you can contact Riot Support and deal w/ players who are harassing or trolling or feeding etc.

Best of luck mate.

What always confuses me about posts like this is why do you all feel liked you need to name call in the first place?

Isn't it so much easier to not say anything? It takes time and effort to be a jerk. If you feel you are so much better than said feeder why not try to help them before you call them names?

It's toxic players that make so many people feel that the league community is horrible. In my experience players are much more likely to change the way they are playing if someone is encouraging rather than toxic.

DrCyanide1/25/2016, 2:53:12 PM2 votes

I think people should remember that they don't know everything about a player just because they played one game with them. I had a 3/11 game not too far back on Ezreal, and I've played a lot of Ezreal : http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/2032380521/42592968?tab=overview

Was I trolling? Of course not, but for whatever reason I couldn't seem to find my stride that game. The most useful thing I did was keep fighting (and die) at our bot inhibitor to delay recalls so Yasuo could back door for the win.

Any game in isolation means next to nothing, it's only when a long standing pattern is established that it means something. You don't get punished for having to AFK one match due to an emergency, or for being terrible one game, or for losing your temper one game. It happens. But when these things become a reoccurring problem then action starts to be taken.

It's the exact same with chat. Reports from one game don't do you in, it's a long standing pattern of that behavior that signals something needs to change.

EvilDustMan1/25/2016, 2:48:31 PM2 votes

Calling the guy a bitch isn't going to solve the situation either. Ignoring everything else, you are antagonizing them into playing worse or feeding more, and thus contributing to the problem.

Its a fact people go on tilt. Its a fact that people have a bad game. Why are we automatically punishing people for facts of life.

ehh ... when you are tilted, you are having a bad game sire, making bad in game decisions and being tunneled vision more and all ..

nothing in tilt says you need to have a bad attitude along with it ...

game and your attitude are two separate things. keep them separate and even your tilted games will become less stressful.

I would fire Riot "MUH PhD" Lyte for being an imbecile, and just remove chatting all together except for private messages. What they really want/need is to have a set of 20-30 non-offensive premade messages like Hearthstone. Riot protects the kids who start the trash talk and provoke other players. When players defend themselves, like any person with at least half a sack would do, they get bans.

Yeah I get this a lot. Hell I have 15 matches where I've lost and 3 wins just recently because of it. Feeders, AFKers, and people who buy their accounts. The issue with this is, Riot don't care about me, or you, or anyone, unless you're a pro or putting money in their pockets they don't care. This company has been shit since day 1 and they'll be shit until the end. Their system is a joke, they can never correct their errors. Takes them days and weeks just to resolve an issue, kind of like the new rank system they had going. Company is a joke. The way I see it, write down your money you've put into the game, so if someone wrongfully reports you, like I get all the time, sue. It's that simple. I actually had a good case against Riot for the same thing and they weaseled themselves out of court by offering free RP. Which is why I have A LOT right now. Good luck.
