So I got banned because people hopped on the report train

About an hour ago I was playing a game as Katarina support and did bad, like really bad, won't lie about that I went like 2-14 at the end of the game I believe but it wasn't intentional, just a bad game. I was getting abuse from 2 members of my team the majority of the game and I'll admit I kinda strung them along because they were getting mad at me and raging simply because of my out of meta pick which isn't reportable, but I was never abusive in any way and the Vayne was able to get my whole team to bandwagon and report me and get me a 10 game chat ban, which I find laughable, I didn't even know you could get an automated chat ban if you were reported by 4 people but it happened. I was wondering if a member of Riot could review the chat logs and tell me what exactly I did wrong if I was actually toxic at one point in the game, even though I truly don't believe I was and if they deem me to have been falsely reported to lift the chat ban.

I would recommend posting your chat logs so people can identify where you were abusing the chat. That being said, you didn’t get a chat ban because you were reported by four people. The system could not care less how many people report - it only takes one report. If you do not abuse chat, you can get 9 reports every game and not be punished.

With demonstrably zero intent to actually play your assigned role, judging by your item build and CS, you're lucky that you only got dinged for your chat violations.

I can accept that your ridiculously bad KDA was earned honestly and wasn't the result of intentional feeding, but your entire approach to this game utterly shit on your team's chances of winning. You've damned your team to zero vision, zero supporting abilities, and an under-farmed ADC. And if, in addition to that, you truly "strung along" your team in chat, then you're nothing but a troll. I can't imagine why you'd expect sympathy from us for a chat restriction when you carry yourself like this.

Well as long as the katarina support gets banned because she had damage items and cs from split pushing and not the toxic vayne that violated multiple rules found in the summoners code I'm a-okay, I'm just trying to make the league community better, as it is the most looked down aspect of this game. ;)

As long as she gets a ban for being toxic towards me as well, I would gladly accept my chat ban, just because someone picks a champion you don't like is no reason to flame him, I've gotten the same responses playing brand or annie support, are they viable options? Yes. Were they to my adc? Nope, and thats why I got flamed.

I’ll be completely honest here, usually I agree with you Jo0o.

This time I can’t however. Playing AP Katarina Support is not by itself against the rules nor punishable. It certainly looks like they’re trying to win - even if they don’t play the “typical” support. There is nothing that says you can’t play a carry support or have kills/CS as support.

If you're going to blatantly disregard your team's wishes, at least offer some sort of explanation or diffuser. You're accepting a higher baseline amount of toxicity when you go wildly off-meta, so inject some politeness to counteract the flames.

Yeah. Communication is key. That being said, him being a dick in chat doesn’t suddenly make his off-meta pick “trolling”, if that makes sense.

I'm trying to read between the lines here, since we haven't seen chat logs. I'm guessing we've got a guy who not only picked off-meta, but took pleasure in his teammates' understandable distress at how far off-meta he went. That suggests somebody who is, on some level, a troll to me. He may have been interested in winning the game, but his actions were completely devoid of sportsmanship and respect for his fellow players.

I agree - it’s not a nice thing to do what he did and it’s definitely toxic. But troll to me (at least in League) means a gameplay offense, not a toxic chat offense.

I think we’re coming at this the same way with different semantics hehe. English is fun to argue in because we’re saying the same thing basically -.-

You'd need to post your chat log from the message if you wanted a second opinion on there, but it's worth mentioning that number of reports doesn't matter. One single report will flag the game to be looked at, extra reports do nothing.

That said:

It looks like you know you did something you shouldn't have. If you posted the chat log, we could narrow down on what.

They should have been on the screen when you got the chat ban notice - I believe they also get emailed to the address on your account.

katarina has literally zero synergy with the support role. much like AP zed, it's considered trolling.

You may consider it trolling, but it is not considered such by Riot unless they actually do refuse to support in game. Riot’s stance is any champion is allowed to be played in any role.

Full AP support Zed is a lot different from Katarina support. That being said, neither would be punished simply for their choice of champion. The determination of “trolling” is based on a holistic review of the game - and it cannot be simplified to “what champion did they pick”.

I've contacted riot support. they flat out said that AP support zed is bannable. amazing how even the board moderators don't even know the rules. really makes you wonder.

If you would be able to post the support ticket (a screenshot) to prove this, I would be greatly surprised to see it, as Rioters have stated multiple times on the boards that they do not ban people for off-meta playstyles. I would recommend you read this thread where one of the Riot employees in charge of behavioral analysis specifically says the following:

Players who cause an undue amount of frustration and pain because of a crazy pick but are dedicated to winning (not trolling) will not receive a ban instead we’ll temporarily lock their account. The player will get a message to reach out to Player Support so they can unlock their account. Before you guys get too scared, given our review of past audits, we feel this will only apply to a few players a year. Seriously, last year thousands of these audits were performed, and we saw only a tiny handful of these cases appear. When contacted; Player Support will let the player know they’re not banned, but temporarily locked out of their account because of an audit. We’ll share in-game examples and reports of the kind of behavior that’s causing them to pop up on our radar. The player gets feedback on how they can communicate what they’re trying to do and how their team can win without ruining the experience of people they play with. After that Player Support will unlock their account. With their account unlocked the player is free to return to games right away.

Players are not banned for off-meta or crazy picks. They are banned for trolling, which does not include simply picking something you do not like.

I reckon if the full AP support zed attempts to play legit through his playstyle and have a clean chat, he might get 4-9 reports, but he sure as hell ain't getting banned, ranked or no ranked. You don't know the system as well as you think you do.

AP Zed does LITERALLY NOTHING because of the adaptive scaling on keystones now, you can't even say that you deal bonus damage with TLD. AP zed is the DEFINITION of trolling because you gain literally nothing (Zed has 0 AP scalings, as I'm sure you knew)

Katarina has been used in a supportive way by streamers such as BoxBox (His weird off-tank katarina thingy) and he simply adapted it into the support role. It was an off-meta pick. Additionally, her reasonable base damage means she isn't 100% reliant on items to do well, and with a few ap/hp items she can dive into a team and deal eenough damage to draw attention away from the carries, but be tanky enough to take it (BoxBox's thought process)

Double-DPS bot is a thing. It's not generally viable and it's better when the DPS comes with some CC (Hey, Zyra, how you doing?), but it's not trolling by definition.

Just so you know, I have played Teemo support and it went just fine.

It was a normal game, katarina support has worked quite well for me in the past and as I dont have the ability to see into the future I could not foresee me doing as bad as I did, I wasn't trolling that game, just like I wasn't trolling every other game in which i picked kat support get over yourself and stop trying to make yourself look edgy with those clever roasts of yours.

I'm going to be honest, If he built item 3303 , I'd be 100% fine with it. It all depends on the matchup. I mostly main Sona and an engage DPS can make my life hell if played properly.

I didnt get the chat logs emailed to me and I didnt even get an onscreen notification, I figured out i had a chat ban when I was in my next game.

I think you may have to log out and log back in to actually get the notification that you are getting a chat restriction sometimes. It should give you a pop-up Reform Card, which will also contain your chat logs that you can copy and paste here if you would like us to review for you.

I can actually agree with both sides of the spectrum.

You did feed and picked a "troll-ish" support, so no wonder you got flamed right? I've heard from different discussions that troll stuff can get banned. I don't know for sure though. You also supposedly "strung em on" so there's that.

But you did try to have fun and play the game. Any champion can work for a support but anything other than the norm can be called troll. I sort of think it's troll but at the same time it isn't. You died a lot this game, that can be considered trolling because you didn't get support items, picked a actual normal support, etc. If you did well it wouldn't be called troll, but since ya' know this was not the greatest game, you got reported.

Just deal with it... We can't do much. Katarina
