As a fellow Sona main, I definitely feel your pain. Especially with her not being in a good place right now, a lot of people look at her as being one of the lower tier supports (at the moment). And in some respects, I can see where they are coming from. She really did suffer quite a bit from the round of nerfs.
If someone is bound and determined to troll, there isn't too much you can do to stop them. But if they are just uncertain about the champion in general, you might try talking to them about your particular playstyle with her, and your reasons for picking her. I've had people ask me if I can play a tank instead in the past. And I'll tell them that yes, I'm capable of playing someone like Leona, but haven't played her much since season 5 and I'm a Sona one-trick, and that if they want the best chance of us winning, it's with me on a champion I know how to play. They usually are okay with that, because no one is legitimately going to ask someone to play a champ they haven't played in 3 seasons in ranked.
Another thing that helps, and I'm not sure if this is an option for you, is duoing with an adc. My best friend and I play together, and he's usually my adc, unless he decides to run in another lane. He knows what my champion is capable of by now, and what she's not. He knows how her healing and damage have been nerfed hard in the early levels, but he also knows that once we hit about the 30-33 minute mark, as long as I have one AP item, I've hit Sona Scaling Phase and even if there is a fed carry on the enemy team, we're in the game no matter how far behind we may have gotten. And if we were ahead? Ha. Put me with a carry and a tank, and we're a rolling juggernaut.
But a lot of adcs don't necessarily want to wait for their support to scale. They expect their support to start off strong, which realistically, most of them do. But just because they expect it, doesn't mean they get to demand it. Just play your best, try to explain your reasons if you can, and if they insist on trolling, report them.
