Allow Step-Ins for AFKs

Hey all,

don't post much here, but after another 4v5, I figured I'd drop an idea in here.

Why not allow other players to "step-in" for afks? Obviously this wouldn't work for ranked, etc. but in ARAM, this seems like it could help alleviate the afk woes a bit. I know I'd be happy to "step-in" to an in-progress game every few matches, because I know how frustrating it is for both sides.

I'm thinking when you queue up, you just check a box that says "I'm available for a step-in", or something similar, and then if there is an AFK game in progress, you could just hop in. Maybe double the IP for that game, or something of the sort?

Anyway, just a quick thought I figured I'd share. Threw a poll in here to gauge some feedback.

It sounds like a good idea, but I don't think people would use it enough to fix the problem and setting up a system like auto-fill would be awful for this. Nobody really enjoys being dropped in the middle of a losing game, with a champion they likely don't know how to play.

idk if known, but the fps destiny has a system like this in place, and it is trash. you're mostly either dropped into games where its close to a 2v6 (which probably won't happen here), a game which is so far gone there's no point in trying, or a game thats about to end. Its not the best system.

There are a few problems with this kind of system in a game like League.

  1. Character/Rune/Mastery discrepancies. Assuming the new player has the same champion as the leaver, do you give them the leaver's setup or allow them their own?

  2. Gold/items. Again, do you make the new player step into the item set or give them gold? And how much to put the new player at a competative build?

  3. Levels. Assuming a fresh start player comes it, where do you place them level-wise? Average of all players? Average of team? Same as the leaver?

  4. IP rewards. This is the big one. How do you reward the replacement player? Full IP? They didn't play the whole game. Percent of game played? Replacement players may not feel the reward is worth the effort-- especially if the game ends a few minutes after joining.
