Game 1 Standapanda0017: fuck him (Shaco ) Standapanda0017: taking mah red and blue Standapanda0017: ffffffff Standapanda0017: fuck (Shaco killed me with summoner 14) Standapanda0017: summoner 14 is for %%%s (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=%%%got&defid=1127498) Standapanda0017: sry zilean (who had summoner 14 as well) Standapanda0017: but fuck ignite (here Zilean was saying something about not knowing what i said) Standapanda0017: sry zilean Standapanda0017: i just called you a %%%got (Zilean: Who cares?) Standapanda0017: i thought you would (Zilean talking about reporting me for "flaming") Standapanda0017: who's flaming? Standapanda0017: i just said ignite is for %%%s Standapanda0017: shite Standapanda0017: they are so fucking salty :D (referring to the enemy team) Standapanda0017: no skill champs (enemy team considers Tryndamere MasterYi Zilean as noob champs) Standapanda0017: gg

So I am wondering what is so "excessively inflammatory and offensive" about my behaviour in this game and if a 14 day ban is a fair "punishment" Have any of you been banned and found it unfair? Let me know MasterYi

Riot has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to hate speech such as "%%%s". If you use derogatory terms like this, you will be quickly banned.

Best not to use those words, even if you think they're "not that bad" or disagree with the definition.

Thanks for the reply, I will watch my language next time :)

It's not just a "bad word". Fuckity fuck fuck.

It's a slur. It's hate speech. It's used to tear down people for simply being themselves, and is often a rallying cry to restrict the rights of LGBTQ individuals. It's ugly, hateful, and to some, terrifying.

and to some, terrifying.

Relax there, guy. He called someone an inappropriate word and deserves his punishment. But you're just being unreasonable now and making it seem like he threatened to kill someone or something. Let him learn from his punishment. Don't stretch the truth. Be fair.

Ever been the victim of a hate crime? I haven't, but I've met people who have.

I'm not personally "terrified" by the use of hate speech. At least not this example of hate speech. But these words are used to incite violence, and many have experienced that violence firsthand. I once drove through a southern state on a road trip, and in a few neighborhoods we saw severe anti-black signs using the n-word. I had a black friend in the back of my car. He wasn't "offended" by the signs; he literally crawled down into the leg space in my car to avoid being seen out of fear of a lynch mob.

I don't think "lynch mob" is a reasonable fear in a League game, but minority players shouldn't need to even address those fears when they're looking to relax and play a video game.

Yep, I have been buddy. That's part of being a minority sometimes.

I agree but there is no immediate bodily threat in what he said. When you use words like "terrifying" you make it out to seem like some people are so fragile that they break down from reading words on a computer screen. In effect, you are legitimizing what the toxic player said by exaggerating the impact his words have. Don't give him a spotlight and a soapbox. And for those who do have really thin skin, we have a mute button in game. Let's be reasonable here.

Well, then sorry if I took it too far. I was attempting to convey the emotional weight that hate speech has, relative to ordinary inappropriate language.

I tend to disagree with the mentality of "there's a mute button, use it". This is the same line of logic as "if you don't want to be sexually harassed, don't wear short skirts", which is shifting the responsibility to the victim. In this case, it's obviously not as extreme, but the effect may still be severe. We don't know what each individual player has gone through in their lives. Just because we don't get offended by a specific slur, others may not feel the same. The focus should be eliminating the use of offensive words, regardless of how thick someone's skin is, simply because the word is, by nature, offensive.

Completely inaccurate. The mute button empowers players to decide how they want their gameplay experiences to be and gives them options to deal with negative players. You can then report those players at the end of the game. How does this lessen the player experience in any way? There's no parallel between your analogy and the functionality of the mute button.

We don't know what each individual player has gone through in their lives. Just because we don't get offended by a specific slur, others may not feel the same. The focus should be eliminating the use of offensive words, regardless of how thick someone's skin is, simply because the word is, by nature, offensive.

I'm not defending the use of inappropriate language, but if you or anyone else wants to get offended, that's on them. As I said previously, the best way to deal with verbal abuse online is to ignore it and not legitimize it (and the mute button helps you do this). This is also why Riot provides people with a language filter so that players don't have to be subjected to inappropriate language. If you aren't taking advantage of the tools Riot is providing and you're just coming on the boards to shitpost about how "offensive" something is, then again, that's on you. If the language filter misses a word or a phrase, people can come on here and report that so Riot can update the language filter. As I said earlier: there's no need to blow the situation out of proportion.

Thanks for having my back dude but did anyone actually read the link to urban dictionary? I thought people use this word only in this sense (the first definition) only, and if it happens to refer to a homosexual then he must be by all means an asshole if he deserves to be called that. Anyways I guess that's a lesson learned...

I'm not defending nor am I endorsing what you said in any way. You still behaved inappropriately. I'm just saying that one dude who commented on your post was a bit out of line with the language he used to describe the situation. And the Urban Dictionary excuse is no excuse for what you did, but I wish you the best in the future on your road to reform.

Urban dictionary doesnt matter. It is well known that word is used as offensive word for gay people.

He didn't even harass anyone, he just said that ignite is for %%%s joking, not a fair ban imo.

As others have said, this is indeed a very offensive word. Any word that denigrates a group of people as one of its meanings isn't acceptable.

Even if it only DID mean "stupid" you're also still saying "Ignite is for idiots" in a game where people have Ignite, which isn't cool. Don't call other players idiots. Definitely don't call them slurs.

Standapanda00171 votes

Well I guess I got used to being called an idiot so it kinda doesn't faze me anymore but I guess now I see how other people can find that insensitive.
