How can they worry about being muted if they never know if they are muted? I believe this would have a real, immediate impact on the person who is being muted. If a person can see, instantly, that one or several teammates have an issue with their behavior then the sooner the issue can be resolved the better. Currently there are only two options, mute them or yell back at them. Neither really addresses the core issue, and I personally believe knowing that you are muted by your team would make you more likely to focus on the game and less on whichever person you are angry with. Of course this is an opinion and this is not a catch-all fix, but making people aware of their behavior in real-time has the possibility for some pretty profound effects. Truly toxic folks will be toxic and you just have to accept that, but I fundamentally believe most players are pretty good folks and do this stuff when they are having bad days or bad games. Those people will probably see something like this and realize they are going too far and take steps to self-correct.
I disagree that there are only two options.
I would suggest there is a third option of not responding with toxicity while not muting. (Edit: whether that means not responding at all, or responding in a cooperative manner)
I would disagree that the most likely outcome of learning you are muted is to focus on the game. Based on how toxic players have behaved in the past, I don't think that knowing they're muted would most likely create focus on the game. Based on what Red posts have said, the reaction that comes from toxic players for those who feel their toxicity isn't being properly conveyed is to change the way they convey their toxicity.
This comes from Reds talking about when people get chat restricted, those people tend to ramp up their toxicity in the few messages they're allowed. The Reds also talked about how when people stopped responding in chat to their toxic messages, people used ping spams to harass people instead. In some threads on the forum, some people have been talking about how people now are trolling and inting but disguising it as "poor play" which makes it difficult because to truly assess poor play vs inting and trolling is to watch not only their reported games but their unreported games and compare and it's a huge time sink for Riot behavior specialists.
Most people are good folks but you don't need to see that you're muted to change that. Maybe a conscientious teammate who tells you to calm down while trying to create a more cooperative atmosphere is better than finding out you're being shut out?
