First time getting Banned for Retaliating against a Toxic Flamer. Please help me understand

Hi Guys. I was recently banned for 14 days due to talking back to a toxic flamer. Long story short, I did use some curse/offensive words at him. I reported him after the game ended, and a few minutes after I got a notification saying I was banned for 14 days? I was never banned on this account before. I heard that you usually get some chat restrictions first, then banned for a few days? Somehow I skipped that and got the harsher punishment.. how's that possible?

Can someone explain this to me. Do riot employees manually ban people or does riot have its own script to ban people?

Thanks for your insights in advance

Edit: Chat Log (so you can see what I had to deal with, and this was after the game ended..)

The saying "two wrongs don't make a right" applies here.

Someone harassing you doesn't mean you get to retaliate by being a jerk. Honestly, ask yourself this question, how does that help anyone?

Most people don't rage as much in response. It's up to you not to flame back. Mute right away, report, move on with your life.

Do you have your chat logs?

Immediate escalation to a 14-day ban is usually the result of encouragements to commit violence ("kill yourself" or "kys" being common reasons for bans), or derogatory language and/or hate speech. It's rare to see an escalation to that level without this language being present.

In short, certain behavior CAN occasionally trigger an escalated punishment. The normal pattern of punishment tiers is for casual toxicity that simply does not improve with each subsequent warning.

It depends on why exactly you were banned. Riot has a zero tolerance policy against racism and hate speech. It's very well possible you used something like that alot in that game, so you should be rather happy you didn't get perma'd yet.

I'd recommend /mute all at the start of your games for the next 500 games and/or 6 months

From Deep Terror Nami on ban procedures:

Punishments are done by escalating through 4 tiers;

  • 10 game chat restriction
  • 25 game chat restriction
  • 14 day account ban
  • Permanent account ban

Players that exhibit extremely toxic behavior, such as for using hate speech or urging someone to harm themselves, may be escalated multiple tiers. Otherwise you typically move up one step at a time, moving to the next punishment if you continue showing negative behavior. Gameplay offenses, such as intentional feeding, do not get chat restrictions; they move to the account ban steps.

Currently, most behavioral offenses and things like intentional feeding are handled by the Instant Feedback System. It does not require a Riot staff member to manually enter in the bans. It's the system that is responsible for scanning the logs of every single game that is reported. It's very efficient, and works much faster at reviewing matches than Riot staff members could. However, Rioters are able to do a manual review of an account and issue punishments if needed.

if you haven't been chat restricted before, it means that you skipped punishment tiers through the use of homophobic slurs / racist hate speech.

That or your punishment was for trolling / griefing / ELO boosting. You should post your reform card if you want to have a proper discussion.
