Hi, I have been playing since beta (or around that time.) Over the years I've understood to "mute all" at the beginning of a game. I don't think I need to justify this as it should be obvious why.

When the tribunal was introduced I ran into a problem. I was sent a warning email that I will be banned if I continue to ignore my team. The only reason they gave was that they had a number of reports about me ignoring the requests of my team members.

It seems Riot has given me two options: Option 1: Buy a gun, place a bullet in it, cock the trigger, and place the gun in the hands of my "team" and indicate for them to shoot me in the head. Option 2: Quit the game.

I think tribunal needs to review the rules surrounding this issue. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

What? It's never been punishable to not communicate in chat. Please post the email.

If so, why? If not, what are you guys doing to try to change this view?

Or, do you think it's just a small, yet vocal minority with this attitude?

The 'general' attitude of players isn't to mute all at the beginning of the game.

The VAST majority of players never experience any sort of punishment at all. Almost every time I see that comment it is from people who are toxic, and have received numerous punishments. The general attitude is if you got punished, you did something to deserve it. As you can see going through these forum posts, most of the time people who post about being punished for no reason get down voted pretty hard. That is because the majority don't agree that the punishment was unwarranted.

Of course we would love if everyone were happy with all of the systems, but I know there will always be a vocal minority speaking out against them. We are of course open to feedback from people about improving.

Okay thanks. I figured you'd have better big picture stats than what just my experience has been.

I wouldn't really pay attention to the upvote/downvote system on these boards for validity though.. You have a very heavy "downvote everything" culture here regardless if someone is actually correct or not. It's worth noting that OP is playing in OCE, which is pretty well known for being extremely toxic.

This happened all on NA before OCE was introduced.

Well, I went through all my emails, about 2500 of them dating back to 2014 and I didn't find it. I don't believe that I hallucinated the email, it could have been some kind of automated warning email.

I would expect for some evidence supporting my claim would exist as I can't imagine that I was the only one to get the warning. If my memory serves I got the warning about 6 months after the tribunal was introduced. According to wiki "The Tribunal was a system introduced in May 2011..." So that would date it at December 2011.

I also checked up on that; more precisely it was 6-9 months after release. I recall Xin Zhao and Vladimir as being the newest champions.

Straight from the website on reporting functions. "Refusing to Communicate with Team - This applies to any Summoner that refuses to use chat or pings. So if you mute chat at the beginning of the game this would apply...correct? On another note I really like the annotation on the riot site. Would be cool if we saw it in the chat room as well instead of being shorthanded. I would think descriptive definitions would be necessary for players to make more accurate reports. After all, what if someone thought griefing and refusing to communicate were the same thing? Just saying plain speak may be a better option.

This was some time ago, it was at least over a year ago. When it happened it turned me off playing, that's why this was a slow response. I thought Riot had lost their minds.

I can check my old emails for it but I think it's unlikely that I will find it because it happened so long ago. I can say with certainty that IT DID happen.

Perhaps the rules of the tribunal has changed since?

The tribunal has been gone for quite some time... More than a year in fact. They still use the term, but it's a different system all together.

In any case you don't have anything to worry about now. I don't know what caused that message to be sent to you, but at least you can rest assured that current policy allows you to mute everyone with no risk of punishment.

You may get a report, because people report for any number of bad reasons, but you won't be punished unless you actually did something wrong.

No.. Failure to communicate (verbally) is an urban myth that is often perpetuated in this forum. Pings are ALWAYS an acceptable min level of communication.

Think about it like this:

Player gets chat banned for verbal abuse.

Then player CANNOT chat. So player is guaranteed to get punished for failure to communicate.

Does not happen. (I often go entire games without saying anything in game.. sometimes nothing in pre or post game either.)

Some people show doubt that this actually happened. I can understand that, it might be unbelievable to some people. I will check my inbox. I will say again it is unlikely that I will find it considering it happened so long ago.

In any case, it seems that this is no longer or wasn't being practiced. So that's good news for me, I'm happy to hear that.

EDIT: I haven't cleared out my inbox since 2014. :)

I think some of us might believe you, but we're just confused why it took so long for you to bring up the topic. Better late than never, though!

As others have said, not using chat isn't a punishable offense. The Tribunal that would have handed out that warning you got a long time back is no longer in use. It was replaced with an automated system which will never ban players for not using chat (most players hardly say anything in chat at all).

So basically, you should have nothing to worry about over it.

If it happened when Tribunal was introduced, that would have been back in S1 and Refuse to Communicate may not have been fully established as a dump report. Or it could have happened during the rolling chat bans, when the system messed up by assuming no chat equalled no improvement.
