The Persistent Problem With Riot's "Tribunal System"
Last season I was placed in Bronze 1, fell all the way to Bronze 5, and carried myself through what I thought would be the worst division in League of Legends to Silver 2. To my great disbelief, once I hit Silver there was literally almost no change in the amount of teams I was placed on with trolls, AFK's, and people who just plain had no idea what they were doing. My friends in gold and platinum say the same things about players in their elo.
I stopped playing a couple weeks before season 5 ended, got my border, and remained in silver for the entirety of the preseason. This season I was placed Bronze 2 (which I have no complaints about seeing how many players placed below their end season rank) and have been fairly excited to play the game in season 6. The thing that is most perturbing to me is although the punishment and reporting system was adjusted there are still a large number of players who solely play the game to ruin it for other people. It also seems that players with positive influence on the community are receiving bans from the same people they are trying to correct.
I just had the displeasure of playing a game with Summoner "3n(1n4528," (not his real name) who for matchmaking chose main mid, secondary jungle. He was given jungle. As anyone can probably guess, the first thing typed in chat was "mid or feed" from no other than E28. Our mid lane graciously took jungle (a role he does not normally enjoy playing) in order to keep the team content. Commendable. Unfortunately, for the first 2 minutes of the game E28 was "Taking a Sh8" and once in lane proceeded to feed non stop in every lane and jungle half for the entirety of the game.
I am operating under the assumption (as it was clearly voiced in game) that most people in the game reported E28. Unfortunately, this is a persistent issue. E28 did not just have a bad game, he didn't just lose lane because the other player was better, and he didn't lose because of poor item optimization. He lost intentionally. Sure, the other team was happy to get a free win, but this kind of activity ruins the game for both sides. Essentially this turns the game into a bot game, where one team loses their gaming experience because the other team is about as capable as a team of bots. The losing team... I'm sure no one needs explanation on why this is not fun.
I understand that since this is an online game with all types of players not every game is going to go well. Not every player on your team will be the same caliber. Not every player will have as much game knowledge. Hell, some people might be terrible at league but just enjoy the lore. My issue is not with these players. People who actually give a consistent effort and have fun are the type of people I want to play with. My problem is that people who curse or try to direct their team or get agitated are punished equally - if not worse - than players who are simply there to ruin everyone else's gaming experience.
Apparently there is a team that is in charge of investigating whether or not players truly deserve bans or ban warnings based on their behavior. Fortunately for us, there is a mute button for people with flagrant uses of language or attitude problems. Realistically the rito police shouldn't need to coddle people through not seeing potty language. Unfortunately, players have no way to be sure that they will load into a game with 4 other well intending players in soloq.
The solution to this problem may not be simple, but I guarantee that the ban system is not adequate to control this problem. Dota has low prio games, GTA5 has low prio online zones, many games will permanently ban accounts or have some sort of deterrent for these players at a much faster pace than 20 5 minute wait bans. Why isn't there a more potent ban system for League of Legends, a game which has a community regarded as one of the most toxic online.
TL;DR: The BanHammer needs a damn upgrade.
